Again, if the pentagon wanted to play dumb and silence, they will go with the "We cannot confirm nor denied route" and don't forget it was the Pentagon that said almost immediately after that news broke on the fact that what people saw in Montana is a Chinese Spy Balloon. Which mean they know, and they were tracking it. Which is what the "fuss" part is about. If they want to lie, they can even say this is our own balloon, nobody would be wiser...

As I said, Biden was briefed some time before, most likely immediate or after the balloon visited Aleutian Island, which mean they know, they didn't shoot it down and kept quiet then., they could have and would have done that. They didn't, that suggested they are going to make a big fuzz about it.

Aside from spying concerns which may be real or presumed, what's also troublesome is if such malfunction would lead to a drop in attitude to such heights utilized by civilian airliners.

This, spying or weather observation, such activities must be carried out by competent people, institutions and countries. In the hands of incompetent actors, even such innocent acts as weather observation could become lethal.
