The First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday adopted three proposals by Pakistan with overwhelming support, with India being the only country voting in opposition.

Pakistan had proposed resolutions with regards to regional disarmament, Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) and conventional arms control at the regional and sub regional level.

The resolutions emphasised the importance of pursuing arms control and confidence-building at the regional level.

Furthermore, the resolutions also shed light on the importance of equitable representation of women in arms control negotiations.

The country’s ambassador at the UN, Maleeha Lodhi, described the support for the proposals as an acknowledgement of Pakistan’s commitment to support disarmament under the framework of UN.

She further elaborated that the commitment represented Pakistan’s goal of improving international peace and security.

While the resolution on conventional arms control was rejected by India, the resolutions on regional disarmament and CBMs were adopted by consensus.

The committee had earlier this month accepted Pakistan’s proposal to assure non-nuclear weapon states against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.
