Three private news channels have been ordered off the air and 21 others have received notices of closure from the government.
Pakistan's ruling party has claimed critical coverage in the media is not freedom of speech, but "treason".

Those comments are likely to further anger civil liberties activists, who have said Prime Minister Imran Khan's government has been trying to suppress journalists.

Khan's government is in the middle of what it claims is an anti-corruption campaign, but critics have called it a masquerade to crush dissent.

    Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reports.

Al Jazeera seems to have a curious and subtle anti-Pak tilt these days.

    Anyway, let's consider the facts:
1.) Supreme Court judges give final verdicts (once the case reaches them after the defendants appeal decisions in the lower courts.) Corruption allegations and cases are brought forward by the NAB, an independent anti-graft body whose chairman is appointed with the the approval of the opposition party.

2.) Critical coverage is not treason and has never been identified as such by any official in the govt who has been authorized to make such a statement; if critical coverage was treason, hundreds of journalists would be tried for it and hanged in Pakistan --- critical coverage is everywhere, both against the Army and the present govt

3.) Channels and social media handles are saying and doing what they want; what's all this fuss about?

If anything, I hope the govt does devise a strategy with the PTA and PEMRA to actually ban channels found to be involved in unsubstantiated anti-State narratives.

There is no media censorship you just cant air interviews of criminals on bail without permission
As for the layoffs well the last government funded them with tax payer Rs Pti decreased that flow and they crumbled due to a faulty business model

None of the pak govts. charges are unethical. Even an accused has a right to have his voice heard. If he was convicted things would get complicated. But taking channels out of air isnt normal. And fund squeezing is something that is borderline wrong and even Indian gov does it sometimes which i completely disagree with, it is againt press freedom. The gov here sometimes gives no ads to the media if they say something to hit their nerves. Shouldnt be the case anywhere.

In court of law convicts can only have their interviews aired after permission from jail authorities Zardari is in jail he got out due to a dated law that requires all MNA,s to be in assembly that doesnot give him permission to give interviews
He is serving jail time if the law on production order would change he wouldnt see the light of day for next 7 years
Media shouldnt be given state patronage in the first place channels that were anti PMLN in the past are unaffected pro pmln fed billions in the last decade cant handle an independent business model
Press freedom doesnot mean they have a right to my tax money
    https://blog.siasat.pk/pml-n-govt-conferred-500-billion-rupees-newspapers-media-outlets/
In Pakistan ad rates were decreased for all and instead of just 2-3 channels all channels were given government ads which crippled the well fed channels of dawn and geo as their business model was based around government ads

I didnt know he was convicted, my bad. Media is helped by the government for them to sustain. You would want them to have funding if you want the truth , after all they are your citizen.

Just a clarification. Zardari is not convicted. He is under physical remand of NAB, given by the competent court. He gave the interview to Hamid Mir, while on production order, for attending the session of the National Assembly. His this act is against the provisions of law; since purpose of furnishing production order is to participate in the proceedings of Assembly, and not giving interviews, holding press briefings and doing other political activities. Other politicians are also violating this rule.

The same journalists crying about press freedom or lack of it are openly making such statements day in day out on their aired programs, get togethers and social media .... Can no one see the hypocrisy in that?
