RAWALPINDI: In a dubious honour, the country now has five former prime ministers and a president facing accountability proceedings against them at the same time.

The former premiers who have come under the radar of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) gavel are Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Yousaf Raza Gillani and Raja Pervez Ashraf from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as well as, Shaukat Aziz from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).

Similarly, former president Asif Ali Zardari is also facing inquiries in fake bank accounts and other cases.

PM Imran has already given NRO to his sister, Marriyum hits out at govt

Arrest warrants for Aziz had been handed out while Sharif, apart from being disqualified from holding public office, is currently serving a sentence in jail awarded in a corruption reference.

Similarly, Abbasi has been summoned in an inquiry regarding LNG with Ashraf also facing cases pertaining to his tenure as the federal minister and premier.

Gillani has been barred from leaving the country owing to prosecution in these cases.

Interestingly, apart from Aziz the the rest facing inquiries are all from opposition parties.

The real national shame is that it is only the PMs and Presidents facing prosecution, and not even one of the long line of criminal military dictators. They ALL should face their crimes in a court of law, equally.

Trials and sentencing can be posthumous, and effective at stopping future similar criminals.

They should be sent to re-education camps and each should have one of their hands chopped.

The Supreme Court did condemn all military dictators in many of its rulings.

Condemnation means nothing. Conviction as criminals with seizure of all privileges and assets is what is needed for future deterrence. For ALL of them, civilian and military.
