Mil Bal Review notes - SA-2/HQ2 Chinese SAMs still in operation; is that true?

Could be for some areas, in Karachis it was paraded ca. 5-6 years ago, while even during these time everyone said its retired, but for Karachi, it wasn't the case!

The single HQ-2 system was purchased in 1983 together with 40 missiles, and was joined by two battalions of improved HQ-2B systems (twelve launchers) delivered two years later.

Why doesnt our Air Defence goes to one force only? Why divided among 3? I think AirForce should be made incharge of all Air Defence Assets except the one on Ships and MANPADS and other mobile assets on LOC and Border which is not possible

Also India is getting S400 which has the max range of 400km. They have indegenious SAMs like Akash. QRSAM is being tested. Spyder and S300s are already present. Barak 8 LRSAM is being installed in INS ships. We need to have potent and long range Air Defence Assets too

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has deployed the Chinese-made medium-range air defence missiles in several cities and military bases to prevent possible new strikes by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The development took place in the wake of IAF intrusion inside Pakistani in February, DNA news outlet cited intelligence reports as saying. On Saturday, Pakistani President Arif Alvi chastised India for having what he described as an “irresponsible” attitude amid ongoing bilateral tensions, which escalated after an Indian Air Force jet intruded in Pakistan last month.

The air defence, which were reportedly deployed near India’s border, include five LY-80 (HQ-16) surface-to-air missile units and IBIS-150 surveillance radar batteries “capable of tracking and destroying a variety of aerial targets at longer ranges flying at low and medium altitude”.

Additionally, the Pakistani military reportedly deployed Chinese-made Rainbow CH-4 and CH-5 drones to conduct surveillance and potential strikes along the Line of Control (LoC).

The development comes after Pakistani President Arif Alvi accused India of having an “irresponsible” attitude and praised Islamabad’s immediate and effective response to Indian aggression. “After the Pulwama attack, India blamed Pakistan without any evidence. India did not adhere to international laws and violated Pakistan’s airspace,” Alvi said, referring to the 14 February attack on an Indian security convoy in the Indian-Held Kashmir, which claimed the lives of at least 40 security personnel.

In a separate development earlier this week, Beijing moved to support Islamabad against the backdrop of simmering Indian-Pakistani tensions. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi underscored that “no matter how things change in the world and in the region, China will firmly support Pakistan in upholding its sovereign independence and territorial integrity and dignity”.

Dear member though a layman yet had few discussions with stakeholders, one thing is for sure the Gen Sb is on public forum and shall reply diplomatically and in general terms. As he said Pak has long range SAMs meanwhile publically Pak has only LY80 longest range SAM with 40 KM range at most meanwhile Hq2b is reportedly retired. On othe rhand yes we hit many old era Jets and helis of enemy yet new generation Jets like Mirage 2000 and other helis with latest defense systems were able to counter PA deployed SAMs during Kargil war.

On other hand it is need of hour to deploy credible AD assets in sensitive cities of country, so far our focus is on point defense of sensitive sites only. At most we deploy AA guns or Manpads which are even ineffective against modern helis. After Apachi becomes fully operational along with support attack helis in large numbers produced by India domestically threat is real.
We should induct more LY60 upgraded batteries in areas near eastern borders along with FM90. Meanwhile HQ 9 for cities away from border especially few for Islamabad, Karachi and Gawadar port.
Pantsir-S1 or equivalent for MBTs defense is also must.
