Pakistani sisters seeking asylum in Sri Lanka
The Juvenile Court in Battaramulla has issued an order preventing the mother of two Pakistani girls, who have sought asylum in Sri Lanka, from going anywhere near them until a ruling on the preliminary objection raised by the lawyer representing the girls is issued in mid March.
The lawyer representing the girls, Asela Rekewa, said that the two girls had fled Pakistan alleging that their parents were abusive towards them and have sought asylum in Sri Lanka through the UNHCR.
However, he said the parents of the two girls, had denied the allegations raised against them and had lodged a complaint with the Police Women and Childrens Bureau in Colombo, seeking the deportation of the girls back to Pakistan.
However, following preliminary objections raised by the lawyer representing the two girls, on the point that the girls do not fall within the age limit under which a case can be filed at the Juvenile Court, the Magistrate said that an order will be issued on the objections next month.
Meanwhile, the lawyer also sought an interim order preventing the mother from going close to the two Pakistani children until the case could be heard for which an order was subsequently issued.
