Asif may be out for the Semis against New Zealand. - Geo

Imran Nazir in for Misbah. - Geo

Some Indian Masala Online has made up a story saying, "Umer Gul might have tampered the bowl against the Aussies, and therefore he will be under the radar for the game against Kiwis." It is interesting to note that the last time the two sides met.. Umer Gul blasted the Kiwis for a fifer for just six runs. Vetori was rather amazed by the reverse swing and therefore hinted in the press conference. Nonetheless, Kiwis are made to be beat up by the cornered tigers.

    Pakistan vs. NZ:

If the game is washed out then NZ will go to final because they are number one in their group. 40% chance of showers tomorrow. I am praying that those showers are turned towards another deserving nation in Africa.

If same pitch is used then chances are of a low scoring game and keeping all PP played by Pakistan in CT, here is my team for tomorrow:

    1. Shahid Afridi
    2. Kamran Akmal
    3. Younus Khan
    4. Shoaib Malik
    5. Mohammed Yousuf
    6. Umar Akmal
    7. Rana Naveed
    8. Umar Gul
    9. Saeed Ajmal
    10. Mohammed Asif
    11. Mohhamed Aamir

This team will give us two spinners, four pacers and one part time spinner in Malik.

Imran Nazir and Shahid Afridi have scored 25 and 36 respectively and both can be explosive on their day. I will take my chances with Shahid to create room for another bowler and also because Shahid is more mature (in comparison with Nazir).

NZ scored 315 against SL and opened a can of Whoop-*** on their pacers, with the above team, Pakistan will have more options.

    Good luck to Pakistan!!!!

Problem is we'll be playing at the wanderers and most of our matches have been at the centurion and if we reach the final it will be at the centurion too.

As long as we don't get over-confident and throw our wickets away (batting would be the key to victory today as bowlers should shine on this pitch), we can handle the Kiwis.

don't worry about the ground guyz, just pray the rain does not effect the match and also they will be using a new pitch for today's match so it will be much different the the one was used in previous matches

    Pakistan look to tame Kiwis

    Saturday, October 03, 2009
    From Abdul Mohi Shah

JOHANNESBURG: Pakistan start as favourites here in the second semifinals of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand with skipper Younis Khan declaring that “it would be hard for the Kiwis to beat us if we are at our best”.

Younis was so confident on the eve of the second semifinal that he said that Pakistan would want to play against England in the final. England were featuring in the first semifinal against defending champions Australia on Thursday.

As Pakistan players went through their paces during a two-hour practice session on Friday afternoon at the Wanderers, there was an amazing confidence in them.

“We want victory here and if we play at our best, it would be too difficult for the Kiwis to get past us,” said the captain.

It was almost three years back that Pakistan last played against New Zealand in a fifty-over match during the 2006 Champions Trophy in India. Though Pakistan lost that match by 51 runs, they looked in no mood to repeat that failure here. “Talk about today. We are playing our best cricket and more than that we are on a mission here and that is to win the Trophy for our country. Since England and Pakistan are the only teams here not to have won the Champions Trophy, we want a final against them,” a confident Younis said.

“New Zealand is a good team and that was why they are in the semis. But at our best New Zealand would not be able to pose any strong challenge to us,” Younis said.

Pakistan last played against New Zealand at The Oval during the Twenty20 World Cup and it was there when Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori blamed Pakistan’s ace bowler Umar Gul of ball-tampering. “That controversy is not on our mind any more. We buried it there and then. We want to play good and positive cricket here and do not want to get engaged in any sort of controversy,” Younis said.

Umar’s sensational bowling got New Zealand cheaply at that time. Two years ago, New Zealand also came face to face against Pakistan during the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup semis in Cape Town. Pakistan won that match comfortably.

Younis, however, was not sure of the final combination of his team for the match against New Zealand, saying every player deserves a chance. “We would select the best combination as it is a matter of country’s pride and prestige. Every player knows that if he fails to get a chance in the playing XI that would be more because a better player has taken up his place.”

Vettori on the other hand believed that the momentum was very much with his team.” The momentum is with us I think. It’s a much preferable way to go into semis, knowing we have won two big games here on the same ground.”

He said he wanted to change the script this time. “Most of the time we lose in the semis. This fall we would change the script and would play the title decider.”

Though tickets for the match are still on sale, chances are that we might see a good crowd for the match. The Wanderers wicket looked as if it was full of runs as it gave a dry and barren look and is void of any grass.

    Pakistan look to tame Kiwis

    Spin duo worries Daniel Vettori

    Saturday, October 03, 2009
    From our correspondent

JOHANNESBURG: New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori is wary of Pakistan spin duo, rating them as the best part of the opponents’ armoury for the Saturday’s semi-final at the Wanderers.

Vettori told ‘The News’ on Friday that both Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi had been bowling quite brilliantly and if there was any point of concern; that was definitely the pair’s success so far in the Tournament.

“I think both the spinners are bowling really well in the tournament and if there is anything that worries New Zealand, is their form here.”

Saeed Ajmal has produced some sensational stuff so far in the tournament troubling almost all the batsmen. The off-spinner has taken six wickets in three matches he had played with an exceptional economy rate of 3.41 runs per over. Shahid Afridi has also grabbed four wickets at 4.38 runs per over. “They have combined in well so far and I think in this competition their combination has proved very beneficial for Pakistan,” Vettori said.

The Kiwi skipper, who was seen training hard in the nets against the available spin bowling options, said they very much had that aspect in mind and were training accordingly.

He also praised the seam attack, saying that Pakistan had got very good new ball bowlers. “I think they have got one of the better seam attacks in the tournament. They a have good combination and that always helps you in a big game. You hardly see a good Pakistan batting line-up but this time they have got the services of some quality batsmen. All and all they have got a strong side and tomorrow’s match would be really interesting.”

Commenting on the New Zealand’s approach towards the semis following the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award his team received the other day, Vettori said it would be good to win the Champions Trophy along with the award.

He said that his team had been playing good cricket in the competition and that was the reason they made it to the semi-finals.

Vettori did not agree to a question that history was very much against New Zealand for the semis as they have already been beaten by Pakistan two years back in the semis of Twenty20 World Cup at Newlands in Cape Town.

Vettori promised to provide the best possible competition to Pakistan.

“I do not think any team is favourite for the semis. We have played some of our best matches of the tournament here. In fact, both of our victories (against England and Sri Lanka) have come at the Wanderers.”

    Spin duo worries Daniel Vettori

Very few people would get this joke.

The idea is, Peshawar's working according Saudi Islamic time, so they saw the match one day before everybody else in Pakistan.

A few days back on Hum sab ummeed se hain, they cracked that next year Peshawar will even celebrate 14th august with Saudi Arabia :P

The pitch looks like a perfect one-day wicket and expect some big scrores from both sides, Spinners might play a crucial role for both teams but Pakistan looks a bit more comfortable while playing spin, not sure how will NZ handle the duo of Saeed and Shahid... Expect another fast-bowler thrashings by the batsmen :D

Yes sir Pitch appears trustable for batting after initial overs....you bring nice point of how will Kiwis handle our spinners duo.....but if Pak bowls second and there is dew then could be few problems....but yes for KIWIS tackling our spinners will be a main determinant of their fate today along with our pacers/seamers :)

Are you looking for a sensationa match or one sided Victory:pakistan:
