Pakistan TV dramas are too feminist, says watchdog

Pakistan's television channels are producing dramas that are too feminist, the country's media watchdog has said, complaining about an absence of "children and men" on the box.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) singled out soap operas' fixation with storylines involving women and their mother-in-laws.

Local dramas and soap operas, many of which seek to challenge conservative taboos, are immensely popular according to ratings.

Plotlines have involved social issues including domestic violence, child abuse, and misogyny.

But Pemra said such dramas depict a “hackneyed image of women and have confined themselves to feminist issues only, therefore, ignoring children, teenagers and men”.

The authority also blasted television channels for scandalising viewers with “intimate moments between couples” and “bed scenes”, ordering a clean up of the airwaves.

Dramas are glamourising infidelity, inappropriate dressing and drinking “in utter disregard to Pakistani culture and values”, it said, adding that hundreds of viewers had written in to complain.

“All TV channels are therefore required to stop airing such content in dramas and produce content in consonance with the socio-cultural norms as per aspirations of Pakistani society,” read a statement from the regulator.

The warning came as the government has been accused of a wider crackdown on media freedom and also of pandering to religious conservatives.

It was unclear how much notice television channels would take of the edict. Analysts said it remained to be seen how serious the government was about the issue and Pemra was often seen as toothless.

Sherry Rehman, a leading senator, said: “So basically Pemra only wants cartoon shows for content? What are “sensitive” themes? Women/people talking about their rights to life, education, careers, property?”

In October, Pakistan's supreme court said it would block Indian content on television after a petition from local producers.

Meanwhile on Wednesday Pakistan's chief justice upheld an earlier ruling that the supreme court would not allow Indian content on Pakistani channels because it "damages our culture".

In October, the court said it would block Indian content on television after a petition from local producers.

"India is shrinking the flow of water into Pakistan. Why shouldn't we close their channels?” Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said at the time.

The nuclear-armed rivals have repeatedly banned each others television and films in tit-for-tat exchanges.

I like the reasons this chief justice gives in his judgements. India is blocking our water(false) , so I will block their TV channels.
In India this type of judicial logic is normally reserved with the lower courts, though such comments by judges at any level would be severely examined by the media and society.
Does Pakistan have written laws or judges have carte blanche to pronounce judgements and quantum of punishments?
In most countries, punishments and fines have to be as per guidelines. For eg here no judge can force anyone to contribute to any dam funds or any such thing. Every judgement will have to be properly explained. That's the reason the janambhoomi verdict is being stalled indefinitely. Because no judge would want a judgement under his name that could not be rationally explained.
    Interesting country Pakistan.
Systems and institutions and all that.

Yea, they should be exercising and becoming fitness babes for their man.

Tbh we men work our *** off for 8 hours a day, 5 times a week, taking care of them. The least they can do for us is to become hot.

I agree, Pakistani dramas are too women centric and family oriented. We need to change that and bring new ideas and diversify storylines.

Though, it saddens me to read about so called vulgarity which doesn't even exist in Pakistani dramas to begin with unless you think that half sleeve Qameez is somehow vulgar or husband/wife holding their hands is a 'bad scene'.

    About time.

Why not about the past wars. Like the ones with swords and horses not tanks and jets.

I see your a man of great taste but honestly tho, we have so much history to be told and it's all going to waste or being stolen by the Indians. Like the movie they made on the indus culture. We should've made that years ago

Who defined the line? Pemra needs to issue clear guidelines right now all they are doing is issuing advisory notices based on likes and dislikes

I remember fawad chaudhry saying something about relaxing censorship laws well we are still waiting

Also, movies should have songs from different languages. This will encourage local music industries. Punjabi and sindhi songs can be introduced into Indian markets. Pakhto songs introduced into Afghan market. Balochi songs in Irani market, and balti songs in Chinese muslim areas. We are literally smack dab center in all of these countries. Our soft power should be touching the sky but we are incompetent.

I love history but I always avoid commenting on history but still I always say that coterminous Pakistan has more history than any other part of the world which should be portrayed in our Entertainment industry massively but alas no money, no will.

Btw, your comment reminded me of a previous thread:
