We need newly design and faster trains not the old design from 1960s.
I would suggest Pakistan railways to work with Kawasaki or Siemens for newer trains.

Don’t put all eggs in Chinese basket.

ISLAMABAD: Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad on Friday announced that all passenger bogies would be manufactured indigenously at the Pakistan Railway Carriage Factory (PRCF) from next year.

Addressing workers of the Pakistan Railways Carriage Factory, he said “I promise that no passenger coach will be imported in future from next year and all the passenger bogies will be prepared in Pakistan Railway factory.”

Good. Pakistan imports products which it should be producing domestically. No wonder the trade balance is so terrible.

Pakistan railway modernization if coupled with pak steel mills can be a catalyst to the revival of PSM. Give an order for railway lines, boggies, sheds and refurbishment of all railway stations over next 5 to 7 years and that can act as a sizable portion to cover the running cost of the steel mill. Same way conceive some projects that use PSM products and u have a viable and a mutual win-win situation.

Pakistan have produced these in past but the problem always been "Productivity"
Modern Manufacturing units can make 500-1000 units in 1 year in USA

Pakistan on other hand can only make 5-10 units per month

Sample Locomotive Factory in USA , more complex process then coaches

Service company services 300-500 Locomotives in 1 Year
3 Men can move a Locomotive in air and move it around different sections of factory

The area where we clearly are behind is Robotics, Cranes , and strategy to think big
    300-500 units per year big

I think the Rasulpor repair center fixed 5-10 units per year ? or month by comparison , all locomotives in one track no robotics involved

Only if Pakistan can use new technologies and find export markets. If thats not the case, then Pakistan itself is not a big market for passenger carriages.

Agree with @jupiter2007 , not all eggs in Chinese basket. Chinese locomotives were crap.

Here is Pakistani factory by comparison , looks outdated
I want you to look at the factory in USA and then compare is what we are doing
we are operating as if it was year 1890 when it comes to Railways and Locomotives

Notice the Quality control inspector speaks and he has the outdated paper file stacked behind him like it is year 1890 , there is no computer in office

    Difference is Productivity
    • 300-500 Units serviced yearly vs Pakistan's 10-15 units per year
    • Since Pakistan never understood Manufacturing , they don't have vast ROBOTICS and mechanical crane or technology usage

    wtf.png

It is not the worker's fault they are trying their best but their is lack of initiative
training of workers and import of new technology

    • Power cranes , to lift locomotives or Coaches
    • Robotics to lift heavy engines or parts
    • Use of Machine tools to create new parts for units
    • General lack of Technology in workshops
    • Lack of design in construction of buildings to sevice 20-25 Units simultaneiously vs 1 at time

After import of new machinery , are the workers being trained to create army of professionals who can do job 900% faster and create more

Whatever British left, we have made worse of it not better. Pakistan Railways in a place like Pakistan can be major transporter of goods and passenger. Railway is the cheapest and most efficient form of transport. But look at our oil and goods carriages for instance. They literally are from World war 2 or before. We never imported or incorporated purpose built, carriages that ply on modern rail tracks. While the world is using 4 axle transport carriages, we still have 2 axle carriages with either boxed or barreled carriages.

It seems we dont have any vision. We just want to make a quick buck and and move on to next election or next party ticket. This shortsightedness is at play in every industry. Look at our auto industry. With little effort, we can become a major automobile producer creating between 3 to 4 million jobs.

We have not had a modern Industrial revolution in Nation

    a) Robotic manufacturing together with Engineering workforce

    b) We have not had a mass production revolution as we don't mass produce anything

    c) We don't know how to import necessary machines and many don't even know what machines are needed for what actions as they never have seen them in Pakistan. Is our Educational System even aware of these modern technologies , let alone train anyone on these systems?

    worldvspakistan.png

So this man in picture was he born with that knowledge , Technology and productivity no
it came after the company he works for imported necessary technology , or created machines, created software , and then offered company based training to workers to teach them how to build and repair faster by training

What should have happened was that the state owned Company like Railways should have been the Top Technology Enabled company and Manufacturing in nation , modern methods

This is what Asian Tigers do a company in Asia , from Korea
    Manufacturing sector

It is very clear what a modern mass production , high productivity company looks like

**Notice they mention their "Steeles Mills role in video with pride"
It all begins at steeles mills who make the parts they need

    * Pakistanis before they claim to be Asian Tiger first need to show their fellow countrymen what a real Asian Tiger does we need to awake from our sleep

When Ayub left we were well on our way towards modernization. Then Bhutto happened and later Sharifs and Pakistan was raped year after year.

Nothing much will happen with PTI even. From the senate committees, state organizations to local institutions are all being run by the same people with the same mind set. There ia no way you can replace them in even a decade.

Pakistan railway is no different.. If they are serious about making any equipment and its maibtenance then they need to get the basic right... Make everything electronic, go for SAP, make external audits compulsory and everything and anything needs to be done openly and as per sops which themselves needs to be made afresh.
This but will not happen as overtime heads would need to be rolled for non compliance or incompetence and no one would thus allow it to happen .

We are not as big as a USA is, nor is our need for train bogies as big as USA.
5-10 a month is more than enough tbh...
