Drop them in the next PSL draft, says Sarfraz over foreign players' 'miscommitment'

DUBAI: Skipper Quetta Gladiators Sarfraz Ahmed reiterated on Monday that the players who miscommunicated with the Pakistan Cricket Board and franchises on playing the league's matches in Pakistan should not be included in the next Pakistan Super League drafts.

Just like last year, Quetta Gladiators are again running the risk of a depleted squad as most of their overseas players are unwilling to visit Pakistan. England opener Jason Roy, star batsman Kevin Pietersen, Australian veteran Shane Watson and all-rounder Ben Laughlin have expressed unwillingness to visit Pakistan for the knockout games.

Speaking in a press conference, Ahmed said: " I think the players should give importance to Pakistan when they accept huge contract offers."

Responding to a question, the Pakistan captain said he won't say Gladiators opener Shane Watson betrayed the franchise as his wife did not allow him to visit Pakistan even though he confirmed that he will play in Pakistan.

The skipper expressed his hope that the local Pakistani players will play as per expectations in the upcoming matches.

Gladiators will play against Peshawar Zalmi in the eliminator at Gaddafi Stadium today.

PSL needs auction system to attract better cricketers: Rameez Raja

Cricketer-turned-commentator Rameez Raja believes the Pakistan Super League can attract even better quality players if it adopts an auction-based system rather than the drafts system it currently uses for player induction.

Per the current system, the players who make themselves available are picked as part of draft picks — a system widely used in North American leagues such as the NBA and the NFL. That system favours league's worst sides as they are awarded earlier draft picks, which subsequently discourages long winning streaks and ensures a level playing field in the long run.

However, it also means that each team has to stay under a predetermined salary cap set and can't go over the budget — a restriction that keeps the absolute cream of world cricket away from the league.

The auction system, however, is what its name suggests. A player can earn as much as anyone is willing to pay for him in open auctions — a system the Indian Premier League has been using with great success, although it favours the more affluent and successful franchises.

Raja believes if the PSL adopts the auction system it too can attract cricketers from the top shelf, telling DawnNewsTV: “I will suggest that we should take it (PSL) to auction rather than draft. It might strengthen the top teams but I feel rest of the teams will also put more effort, and financially, it will become a bigger game.

“Many of the current big names in international cricket will come to play and won’t take it as a dry run [and warm-up] to the next league — IPL — where they get more money. This will increase stakes."

Raja admitted that at this point his suggestion is more a wish rather than anything concrete. “I am not sure if our system can do it or not but personally, I would like to see it that way,” he said.

The former Pakistan captain also talked about the low turnout for PSL matches in Dubai and Sharjah, claiming the league and its teams did not do as much they should've to fill up the stadia.

“I believe we will need to hire tour operators," said Raja. "We will have to take fans from Pakistan. All the stakeholders, who have invested money in the league, they all need to put in an effort because it is important for their product to be visible.

"If you want to hold the league in the UAE, you need tour operators, you need to engage labour camps and cities. I think we took things for granted this year and did not get the response which we received in the last two years.

"But the good thing about the league is that people in Pakistan are still enjoying it."

Australian and English players are coward And now Quetta will be without international players just like previous season. They should have included those international players who were willing to travel to Pakistan

The Quetta Gladiators will face defending champions Peshawar Zalmi in the first eliminator of the third HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) today as the tournament returns to Lahore after a year.

Strict security measures have been taken for the two play-offs to be held at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, which successfully hosted the final of the second PSL last year.

See: Lahore and the PSL final

The Gladiators, the runners-up of the last two editions of the PSL, will not have the services of experienced Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, dashing English batsman Kevin Pietersen and his countryman Jason Roy as well as left-armer Ben Laughlin for the upcoming matches.

However, the players who arrived in Lahore to accompany the Quetta side include Rilee Rossouw, Mahmudullah, Chris Green, Thisara Perera, Johnson Charles and Tom Kohler Cadmore.

The foreign players from Zalmi's squad who have arrived in Pakistan for the matches include Darren Sammy, Andre Fletcher, Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, Tamim Iqbal and Rikki Wessels.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Gladiators’ captain Sarfraz Ahmed had sounded optimistic about his team's performance despite the replacements.

“Yes we had lost the final to Zalmi at the Gaddafi Stadium last year, but we have some plans for them this time and will not repeat the mistakes of the past and we will try our best to grab the opportunities to win it,” said Sarfraz who is also captain of Pakistan in all three formats.

Zalmi are meanwhile pinning their hopes on dashing batsman Kamran Akmal, the top scorer of the PSL-III, to continue with his magnificent form after having recovered from his fitness problems.

Islamabad United has already qualified to play the final in Karachi. The winner of today's contest will face off with the Karachi Kings tomorrow to vie for the second finalist spot.

    Security measures
The roads surrounding the stadium will be cordoned off around 2pm. Schools in the area were already dismissed at around 11am.

A shuttle service will be provided to transport spectators from the designated parking points to the stadium.

After a thorough security check, visitors will be allowed to enter the stadium starting at 4 in the afternoon. The match will commence at 7pm.

Police authorities have intensified security ahead of the two PSL matches by deputing over 18,000 personnel.

Pakistan Army and Rangers (Punjab) personnel have also been deployed in and around the stadium, airport and the hotel where the players are staying.

“The Punjab government has made security arrangements for international cricketers equal to that of the state guests,” DIG operations Dr Haider Ashraf told Dawn while sharing details of the security plan.

Foreign commentators go sightseeing in Lahore
Alan Wilkins and Daren Ganga, two of the three foreign commentators who are in Pakistan to call the match, were given a guided tour of the city of Lahore by former Pakistan captain Majid Khan on Tuesday.

The duo were spotted riding a rickshaw, roaming the city streets and generally having a great time.

Slater did not accompany Wilkins and Ganga on their day out in Lahore but will commentate during the the Pakistan leg of PSL 2018. Danny Morrison and Damien Fleming, who were both a part of the commentary panel in UAE, did not travel to Pakistan — the former due to his wedding anniversary and the latter for unspecified reasons.

More last-ball drama as Peshawar Zalmi knock Quetta Gladiators out of PSL 2018

Anwar Ali's plundering of 22 runs in the final over went in vain as Quetta Gladiators fell just one run short of their target in the Pakistan Super League 2018 Eliminator at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, losing to Peshawar Zalmi and going out of the tournament.

In another PSL match with final-over drama, the all-rounder was asked to come up with 24 runs off the final six balls. He hit four boundaries, including three 6s, but his attempt for a one last maximum on the final ball saw him fell agonisingly short of completing a Carlos Brathwaite-esque sequence.

Earlier, the Gladiators won the toss and decided to field first on a matchday that had seen plenty of rain and more was expected.

The equation was simple for both the teams: lose and go home or win and earn a shot at the PSL 2018 final opposite Karachi Kings.

The Gladiators were missing key trio of Shane Watson, Kevin Pietersen and Jason Roy — all of who opted against visiting Pakistan. In their absence, the two-time finalists drafted Thisara Perera, Mahmudullah and Tom Kohler-Cadmore into their line-ups.
