Lahore matches in HBL PSL moved to Karachi due to logistical and operational challenges

    · Pakistan-leg matches to commence from 9 March; all eight matches to be played at the National Stadium.

    · Ehsan Mani: “Due to the recent and prevailing uncertainty, we felt it critical to make a decisive decision at this juncture. Ensuring all matches are played in Pakistan falls in line with our vision to take all eight matches of the HBL PSL 2019 matches to the people of Pakistan”

    Dubai, 3 March 2019:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) today announced the eight Pakistan-leg matches of the HBL Pakistan Super League will be played at the National Stadium in Karachi. This late change, caused due to a situation beyond the PCB’s control, has also resulted in a tweak to the Pakistan-leg matches, which will now commence from 9 March with all eight matches to be played in as many days.

The decision has been made following the delayed opening of the Lahore airspace for commercial flights, which has created substantial operational and logistical challenges relating to the delivery of the three Lahore matches, which were originally scheduled for 9, 10 and 12 March.

Some of the key challenges that PCB has faced as a result of the delayed opening of the Lahore airport have included securing production equipment and the commitment of broadcast crew, as well as finalising the logistics for the officials and teams.

PCB Chairman Mr Ehsan Mani: “This has been a difficult and tough decision, which has been taken following discussion and consultation with all the franchisees and service providers to ensure certainty and clarity on the event as well as delivery of the remaining matches as per the PCB’s own very high standards.

“Due to the recent and prevailing uncertainty, we felt it critical to make a decisive decision at this juncture. Ensuring all matches are played in Pakistan falls in line with our vision to take all eight matches of the HBL PSL 2019 matches to the people of Pakistan.

“We had considered the option of shifting the dates of the eight matches in Pakistan, but because the Pakistan cricket team has to leave for the UAE on 19 March for the ODI series against Australia, this was not possible. We also looked at swapping matches between Lahore and Karachi, but paucity of time would have rendered this option unworkable.

“It is unfortunate that the headquarters of Pakistan cricket will be unable to host the PSL matches in 2019 due to no fault of the PCB, but this is a small sacrifice for a bigger and larger national cause.

“We have spoken with the franchisees, who have backed this decision and have reinforced that all their foreign players will feature in the last eight matches of what has been an outstanding and highly competitive tournament that has been thoroughly enjoyed by the fans and the players.

“The PCB appreciates and applauds the support of the franchisees as well as the players, who understand that the evolving situation has forced us to make these amendments to the event schedule.”

According to the revised schedule, the Pakistan-leg matches will start on 9 March with Lahore Qalandars meeting Islamabad United at 7pm PST. The only double-header will be played on 11 Match when Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans will go head to head at 2pm. This will be followed by Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi match which will start at 7pm.

The Qualifier between the number-one and two placed sides will be played on 13 March, while Eliminator 1 between the third and fourth-placed sides will take place on 14 March. Eliminator 2 between the loser of the Qualifier and winner of Eliminator 1 will be played on 15 March.

The final will take place as per schedule on 17 March, with the first ball being bowled at 7pm PST.

    Revised event schedule:

Saturday, 9 March – Lahore Qalandars v Islamabad United (match starts 7pm PST)
Sunday, 10 March – Karachi Kings v Quetta Gladiators (match starts 7pm PST)
Monday, 11 March – Lahore Qalandars v Multan Sultans (match starts 2pm PST); Karachi Kings v Peshawar Zalmi (match starts 7pm PST)
    Wednesday, 13 March – Qualifier (1 v 2) (match starts 7pm PST)
    Thursday, 14 March – Eliminator 1 (3 v 4) (match starts 7pm PST)
Friday, 15 March – Eliminator 2 (match starts 7pm PST)
Sunday, 17 March – Final (match starts 7pm PST)

Ticketing – The PCB will refund tickets for all Lahore matches as per the face value of the tickets with more details to follow in due course.

With the slight amendment in the match schedule for Karachi matches, further details will be provided for existing match ticket-holders and for purchasing of tickets for the additional games.

Clash of the table toppers and bottom teams as PSL shifts to Abu Dhabi

The HBL Pakistan Super League shifts to Abu Dhabi after a two-day rest with table toppers Peshawar Zalmi taking on number-two placed Quetta Gladiators and bottom-placed teams Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings locking horns Monday.

Zalmi and Gladiators are on equal points at 10 from seven matches each, but Peshawar is placed at number-one due to their better net run-rate of 0.85 as compared to Quetta's 0.08.

This means the winner of this match will secure a place in the play-offs.

Quetta Gladiators were off to a great start, winning their first four games before losing the next two.

But on Friday, they thumped Multan Sultans to return to the top.

Peshawar Zalmi clinched a last-ball thriller against Islamabad with Liam Dawson hitting the winning boundary off Mohammad Sami.

In that regard, Peshawar has shown remarkable quality of playing well under pressure.

Peshawar will hope their opener Kamran Akmal returns to his best as his only notable score to date has been 49. He did become the first batsman in HBL PSL history to complete 1,000 runs during his 19-run innings against Islamabad, but Peshawar would hope of more from him in the business end of the league.

Quetta has won all their games while chasing and their two losses have come batting first.

So, Peshawar would again like to put them into bat after winning the toss.

Only one team has batted first after winning the toss in the 22 HBL PSL matches to date.

Kamran's younger brother, Umar Akmal, has also lost his run-scoring form after a bright start to the tournament.

But, Quetta also have Shane Watson (226 runs in seven games) and Rilee Rossouw who both give their team solidity at the top and in the middle.

Both Peshawar and Quetta have good pace attacks, Peshawar gets the bits from Hasan Ali (18 wickets in the league so far) and Quetta from Sohail Tanvir who has 12 wickets in seven matches.

The other match on Monday with both the sides striving to stay alive in the tournament.

Both Karachi Kings (seven matches, three wins and four defeats) and Multan Sultans (eight games, six losses and just two wins) need a win badly.

Multan will definitely be out if they lose to Karachi, who will still have an outside chance even if they go down.

Multan Sultans have big names in Shoaib Malik -- top-scorer in the league with 240 runs in eight matches -- and Shahid Afridi.

Malik said his team was not crossing the finishing line.

"Lady Luck has not been with us in this tournament and we are not been able to cross the finish line.

So, in the last match, we badly need a win and I am sure the team will give it a best try," said Malik.

Karachi Kings will also want to win as they would love to reach the play-offs as following Monday's match, their remaining two matches will be in Karachi.

They will hope for a place in the play-offs before a home crowd will inspire them further.

Despite having a good pace attack comprising of Mohammad Amir, Usman Shinwari and Sohail Khan, Karachi has not been able to stop teams from scoring good totals.

Liam Livingstone has been the top performer for Karachi in batting as he is third on the run chart with 227. His innings of 38 set the tone for Karachi's run-chase of 134 against Lahore in their last game.

Karachi's Babar Azam also needs to score big after scoring just 19 against Lahore, while Colin Ingram is also in search for runs after his magnificent 127 not out against Quetta in Sharjah.

Upcoming matches: 4 March, Match No.:

23-- Peshawar Zalmi v Quetta Gladiators, Abu Dhabi (match starts 4.30 pm PST) 4 March (Match No.

24-- Karachi Kings v Multan Sultans, Abu Dhabi (match starts 9pm PST) 5 March (Match No.

25-- Lahore Qalandars v Peshawar Zalmi, Abu Dhabi (match starts 4.30 pm PST) 5 March (Match No.

23rd Match (D/N), Pakistan Super League at Abu Dhabi, Mar 4 2019

Quetta Glad won by 8 wickets (with 14 balls remaining)

    Watson's unbeaten 91 seals Quetta's PSL play-off spot
Quetta Gladiators 166 for 2 (Watson 91*, Shehzad 50) beat Peshawar Zalmi 165 for 4 (K Akmal 72, Pollard 44*) by eight wickets

    How the game played out

Shane Watson's sizzling unbeaten 91 moved him to the top of the PSL 2019 run charts and helped Quetta Gladiators become the first team to seal a playoff spot this season. Watson added 129 for the second wicket with Ahmed Shehzad, to ensure that chasing the target of 166, set by Peshawar Zalmi, turned out to be a cinch.

Zalmi paid for a conservative approach through the early and middle parts of their innings after being sent in to bat. Opening Andre Fletcher and Imam-Ul-Haq took up just over a third of the available deliveries in the innings, scoring at an identical strike-rate of under a-run-a-ball, providing weak support for Kamran Akmal during his 72 off 50 balls.
