Remaining PSL 6 matches likely to take place in September or November

PCB and franchises are facing difficulties in scheduling the remaining 20 matches

10 March, 2021

The remaining Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six matches are likely to take place in September or November, due to lack of a suitable window in March or June.

According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and franchises are facing difficulties in scheduling the remaining 20 matches of the event after it was postponed due to Covid-19 cases among players and support staff officials.

One of the options was to hold the matches towards the end of March but that will clash with Pakistan’s tour of South Africa. PCB believes that delaying an international series won’t be a good thing to do while it also doesn’t want to ruin its relationship with Cricket South Africa. Chartered flight has also been booked for the Pakistan team so chances of matches taking place in March are very slim.

June is also an option on the table but the hot weather, during that time of the year in Pakistan, and availability of England players, due to Vitality Blast which starts on June 9, could be a hindrance in this regard. Also, foreign players would be tired after taking part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) which ends on May 30.

Although, franchises want the matches to take place as soon as possible but September, when no international series is planned, and November, after T20 World Cup, seem to be the only viable options on the table at the moment.

Karachi was to host 20 of the 34 PSL matches while remaining 14 were scheduled to be held in Lahore from March 10 onwards.

The Punjab government has given go-ahead to host the matches.

During the meeting, the franchise owners complained that they were not taken on board while finalizing planning for the tournament.

They demanded the PCB to taken them into confidence over the bio-secure bubble.

The cricket board aims at concluding the PSL 2021 by June as the national team is scheduled to visit England and West Indies for matches. On their return, Pakistan will host England and New Zealand in September.
“Five out of the six franchises urged the PCB to shift the remaining matches of the PSL 2021 to Lahore,” said the official.

The final decision regarding the matter will be taken in the next meeting which is going to be held in the coming days.

Lahore was originally scheduled to host 14 of the 34 matches of the PSL 2021 from March 10 onwards, which included the final as well.

The Punjab government has okayed the proposal to host the matches.

Heaps of complaints

In the meeting, the PSL franchise owners lodged a heap of complaints, saying they were not involved in the planning of the league.

In the virtual meeting, Mani, Chief Executive Wasim Khan, COO Salman Naseer, Director Commercial Babar Hamid, and franchise owners came face to face for the first time since the PSL was called off on March 3.

The cricket board is to complete the sixth edition by June because the national team is to undertake an ODI and T20I tour to England and from there it will fly to West Indies.

On their return, Pakistan will host England and New Zealand in September. So the conduct of the PSL before their travel to England is necessary.

Chairman Ehsan Mani assured the franchise owners that there will be nothing to complain about in future

The official said there was also a possibility of the PSL resuming later this month in case of postponement of the tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in a meeting with the six franchises of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Thursday, decided to hold the 20 remaining matches of PSL 6 in Karachi in June of this year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in a meeting with the six franchises of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Thursday, decided to aim for holding the 20 remaining matches of PSL 6 in Karachi in June of this year.
In a statement, the PCB said the decision was unanimously agreed upon by the franchises and the cricket body "after taking into consideration all factors relating to event organisation".

It said that the month of June had "emerged as the most preferred and practical window" because the national team had commitments in March/April and late August/September.

The tournament was postponed midway earlier this month after seven people participating in PSL 6 tested positive for Covid-19.

At the time, the PCB had said the decision had been taken out of consideration for the health and well-being of all participants in the tournament.

While the PCB had suggested the windows of May, June and September, the franchises were interested in holding the games during March-April or June, Dawn reported earlier.

In its statement today, the PCB said "the remaining 20 matches in June are now being planned following the men's national cricket team's return from Zimbabwe on May 13 and before their departure for England on June 26".

"The PCB management will now look into the operational and logistical challenges and revert to the franchise owners and stakeholders," it added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan on Thursday (today) reported more than 2,000 virus cases for the first time since January amid fears of a potential third wave of the novel coronavirus in the country.

According to official data, Pakistan reported 2,258 cases in the last 24 hours, marking the first time the country has reported over 2,000 infections since January 29, when 2,186 cases were recorded.

An NCOC (National Command and Operation Centre) press release stated that 42,164 tests were conducted on March 10, which translates into a positivity rate of 5.3 per cent, while the total number of active cases in the country is 17,627 as of March 11.
