Pakistan has had many small sized desalination project able to supply water for few neighborhoods but we never had a full capacity Mega project like ones installed in Middle east

Changes are high under Prime Minister Imran Khan's term we will get a Mega Desalination plant started

The projects in Middle east have massive capacity
That they can not only serve up a city but excess water is transported to farms in desert zones

However .....we have some assets which are already constructed but not even turned on

600 Million Dollar plant lays waiting for someone to turn the key so it can start working, is NAB checking in on this ???

Strangely back in 2007ish , work started on a mini size Desalination project up in Karachi it was called Cogen Desalination plant with a cost value of 600 million Dollars

Sadly this magnificent (but small scale plant never got commissioned) because the gas to run this completed project never materialized once again one of those projects in Sindh which failed under PPP zardari clan watch

This plant was completed but ..........it never ....started

I mean this is not a mirage , but real completed project
    [IMG]

Has a fantastic location , all the plant is constructed , all the wiring and machinery is brand new.......but ....it is not started

It does not have gas supply that is why , but since we started to get the gas from Qater few years back ? Why is this project not revived to start providing water for Karachi DHA area?

Video from 2013 , confirms it finally was able to run ....

I sure hope it is still running , a small step taken perhaps in Musharaf sahib's time

However what we really need is a Desalination plant similar in size like the ones in Saudi Arabia

Desalination is very very power intensive.
The plant itself isn't particularly complex.
however supplying the power required to run the plant is another story.

We should take a lead from UAE, and ensure that the plant runs on Solar energy.

Should the plant run on Oil, we will keep on bleeding money.

We should have a plan to use Solar farming + Desalination plant.
Something like what we made in Qaid-e-Azam solar park would work well with Desalination plant

We need a desalination plant 95% bigger size then what we constructed in COGEN desalination plant

The excess water could in theory , refill the aquafiers in Thar desert and inner desert sindh area and make them farmable

It would have been better to distribute the solar panels to residential/commercial properties to connect straight into the consumer.

~17% of electricity output is lost in transit.

QEASP will be a colossal rot once the true costs become apparent. The maintenance alone is where the real corruption will be.

Pakistan has experimented with "mega" organizations in every industry. Steel, Airline, Logistics, Maritime, Electricity, Water, Agriculture. And the 1 thing they all have in common is failure.

i still believe that desalination plant will be far more expensive than lining major canals and using the saved water for drinking

Pakistan has average of 110-150MAF of water

Desalination plants are important for southern pakistan and the rest of pakistan should use canals and dams. There should be 2 large plants, one in Karachi and the other in qawdar, with a small one in Ormara

Well once the Desalination plant is constructed the water can be moved in many ways

    a) Aquaducts
    b) Various Canal Projects we already have we just have to get water to certain points

    Old way

Simple canals can change the landscape

The DHA was a fraud, a second hand plant bought to make some money, it never worked.

So what is the status of this Desalination plant ? in 2019

Only in Pakistan a brand new Solar plant is delcared loss
Only in Pakistan a brand new Power plant (Nandi poor is constructed twice)
Only in Pakistan a completed desalination plant never runs even for few years

Ignore my earlier comment we never made "many desalination plants" it seems we made 1-2 and even those were not quite successful

If my memory is correct around 2004-2005

Musharf's plan was to constructed a Dubai Crecent like setup at Karachi beach and this desalination was meant to supply water 100% so a healthy financial hub or a community for workers can be made who are provided all facilities of a modern city
    [IMG]
There were objection from PPP as usual but the goal was to create a moden living community by the sea

    a) Condo
    b) Water availability for drinking
    c) View for sea
    d) Job in Financial hub
    e) Green parks

And Bin Qasim public park was created as a gift "free" to poor people of karachi so they can still visit the beach and enjoy a permanent picnic spot this is before that ugly tower started to be constructed near the park

It's 2019 and no crecent bay ever got created because Democracy came back with PPP

    https://tribune.com.pk/story/204627/dha-takes-over-crescent-bay-project-on-the-rocks/
DHA and Emaar Giga International had signed a memorandum of understanding on May 20, 2004 to construct 46 towers in three ‘uniquely designed’ bays.

According to Emaar Pakistan’s website, each of these three bays was to be “encircled by a community with its own unique look and character, which extends from the architecture to the landscaping and the street furniture.” Crescent Bay One was set to feature a hotel, malls, a waterfront promenade, piazza, four office towers, surrounded by green spaces, parks and plazas. Crescent Bay Two was to house residential towers complete with a Waterfront Retail Arcade running along the beach. Crescent Bay Three was termed the most exclusive of the residential neighborhoods, with controlled vehicle access, and a luxurious waterfront promenade.

However, even though more than seven years have passed since the deal was inked, DHA contends that only two towers and that too only till the second floor have been constructed, even though Emaar has collected more than Rs1.5 billion from its customers in advance.

Moreover, out of the 110 people who were allotted plots in Crescent Bay, 100 of them are in litigation against Emaar and many of them are demanding their money back.

Before ............Bahria Town Karachi ....there was crescent bay and they planned to make a resort in one of the island as well

Well since ....Crecent bay became a Dust bin project , Government of Pakistan should figure out of this Desalination plant at least can be used to manufacture water and help remove water shortages ??????

Almost 15 years and a simple beach side community could not be finished on time and desalination project also failed after 500 million dollar setup

Desalination is too expensive. Why would an energy deficit country like Pakistan resort to desalination ? it is mind boggling.

We now we have options for valid power source
Sindh is 99% sunny so solar farm are also possible

    a) Nuclear power plant
    b) Coal based power plant (bit heavy on environment but an option)

I personally prefer a Nuclear plant Power unit 100% only for desalination plant's energy needs

Karachi has same weather as Miami city

there is a reason the solar energy is not viable
    nuclear power is not cheap
