Pakistan utterly dominant in win over fairly beatable Cricket Australia XI

Pakistani cricketers usually make for a miserable bunch on tours of Australia and have at times even struggled against hotchpotch sides in warm-up matches Down Under. But they were pretty dominant in their tour opening T20 against Cricket Australia XI on Thursday, brushing aside their opponents in Sydney by six wickets and with 13 balls to spare.

Granted that the CA XI was mostly filled with second-tier cricketers, most of whom had never played at the highest level, but it was still an impressive feat on Pakistan’s part.

After losing the toss and being told to bowl first, the Babar Azam-led side was on their game from the get-go, picking up the first wicket on the very first ball. Mohammad Irfan, the comeback colossus, the 7’1 behemoth, did the damage.

After Ryan Gibson (0) everyone else contributed in double figures but none of the batsmen could play a long innings. Thus, a massive score was not be seen.

CA captain Chris Lynn was the most recognised of his team’s batsmen. He contributed 24 off 16 before being bowled out by Wahab Riaz.

The real demolition man though was legspinner Shadab Khan, who took three wickets for 30 runs in his four overs. Where Shadab was the most destructive, Irfan was the most economical, giving away just 19 runs in his four overs to go with his first-ball wicket.

Shadab found his missing mojo with the ball and so Azam and Fakhar Zaman did too, but with the bat. The pair dealt the Australian bowlers with ease and formed a 78-run partnership for the opening wicket.

The game was pretty much over, thanks to the salve up top. Azam had a 29-ball 34, Zaman a 39-ball 43 and Haris Sohail (32 off 22 balls).

Khushdil Shah, the new batsmen picked for the upcoming T20I series with the real Australia, did not get to bat unfortunately.

Shadab was named the player of the match but Irfan’s impact was also pretty important.

The first T20I between Pakistan and Australia will be played on Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Shadab, Fakhar give Pakistan roaring start to Australia tour

Pakistanis 138 for 4 (Fakhar 43, Babar 34, Dwarshuis 2-18) beat CA XI 134 for 6 (McSweeney 30, Lynn 24, Shadab 3-30) by six wickets

It's dangerous to read too much into one warm-up match against modest opposition, but the early signs are that Pakistan's attack will provide a much sterner test for Australia than they have faced from Sri Lanka.

An experienced bowling unit put in a solid display at Bankstown Oval to restrict the Cricket Australia XI to 6 for 134. Mohammad Irfan struck with the first ball of the tour, a searing yorker to remove Ryan Gibson, and Shadab Khan picked up 3 for 30.

Pakistan's openers, new captain Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, then added 78 for the first wicket as the target was knocked off with ease. Chris Lynn, the Cricket Australia XI captain, was impressed.

"Their fast-bowling unit they have guys who can bowl 150kph and batters are world class. They put on a clinical performance today," he said. "Irfan has an x-factor about him, then at the other end you have Mohammad Amir and we've seen for a number of years how class he is. The have a left-arm spinner in Imad [Wasim] and Shadab Khan is a genius with the ball. [Australia's] batters will have a tougher challenge."

Pakistan left out their two young quicks in Mohammad Musa and Mohammad Hasnain, alongside uncapped legspinner Usman Qadir, in favour of giving all their experienced bowlers a run before the opening T20I in Sydney on Sunday.

Irfan, who has not played a T20I for three-and-a-half years, started in fine style as he left just one stumping standing when Gibson got nowhere near the first ball of the match - much to the delight to a healthy gathering of Pakistan supporters.

After just two runs came from the first two overs Lynn responded with an onslaught as he crunched four fours and a six before being cleaned up by Wahab Riaz as the CA XI finished the powerplay on 2 for 40.

When Imad Wasim trapped Jake Fraser-McGurk lbw, it was 3 for 42 and the innings was threatening to unravel, but the CA XI managed to string together some small partnerships without every breaking loose.

Shadab, who claimed Alex Ross via a top edge, added two further scalps in his final over to suggest that Qadir will be warming the bench at least at the start of the T20I series.

Pakistan's top three all looked in decent touch, taking advantage of some enticing boundaries, with Harris Sohail striking three sixes in his 32 from 22 balls before being bowled with four runs needed as Ben Dwarshuis struck twice in three balls as he also had Asif Ali caught behind.

The CA XI legspinners, Daniel Fallins and Lloyd Pope, managed a wicket apiece with ending with an encouraging 1 for 25 from his four overs having found enough turn to cause some problems.

the team which thrashed pakistan recently itself got thrashed by the aussies. most likely we will loose badly all the T 20s and tests. we need to accept we dont have the required talent and system to produce cricketers who can play well at international level. i remember after the last series in australia one of the australian ex cricketer said that we should not invite pak team to australia .

Babar sets multiple records in first Australia, Pakistan T20I
The 25-year-old’s unbeaten 59-run knock included five fours and two sixes

Top-order batsman Babar Azam continued his dominance in the shortest format as he set multiple records during the abandoned first Twenty20 International (T20I) between Australia and Pakistan on Sunday in Sydney.

Azam’s unbeaten 59-run knock off 38 balls, which included five fours and two sixes, was the highest score by a Pakistan batsman in his debut as captain.

The record was previously held by veteran all-rounder Shahid Afridi for scoring 50 runs from 37 balls in his captaincy debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2009.

The 25-year-old also went past all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez in scoring the most fifty-plus runs for Pakistan in T20Is. Hafeez in 86 T20I innings has 10 fifty-plus scores under his belt, whereas Azam has 11 in just 34 innings.

The records didn’t stop there as Babar also became the only Pakistani batsman to score 1500-plus T20 runs in a calendar year.

Indian batsman Virat Kohli (1614 runs in 2016) and West Indies opener Chris Gayle (1665 runs in 2015) are the only other batsmen to score more than 1500-plus runs in a calendar year.

The Pakistan T20I captain has scored 1551 runs this year and still has two innings left against Australia to snatch the record for scoring most T20 runs in a calendar year from Gayle.

Babar’s next opportunity to break the aforementioned record will come on Tuesday, when the Men in Green take on Australia in second T20I in Canberra.

Pakistan was unlucky throughout the match until the washout happened. We were going well with Babar and Asif and it rained. Then we were left with only three overs and the tempo was broken. We would not have got out like that if we knew we had full 20 overs.
    Pakistan batting did well enough.
Bowling changes need to be made. Irfan and amir don't look threatening. Use moosa instead of Irfan.

Rizwan seems to be a poor T-20 batsman from his overall records. Although heis List-A/ ODI and FC/ Test records are impressive.

Whoever was calling for dropping of Iftikar got their reply today. I always thought he would be good finisher in T-20s. Fakhar is alright. His overall score is ok (Average+Strike rate). Drop Haris from T-20 (Although he will be a fantastic ODI & Test player for Pakistan- My prediction). Pursue few more series with Asif. With a little bit of confidence, he can be a good finisher as Iftiker is getting old.

Iftekhar is a proper batsman should play up in batting order. I am not sure why some people want him to fail and become water boy or towel boy like Fawad Alam.

since we are a weaker side compare to Australia, we should take chances by dropping Fakhar and Asif Ali and bringing Shan Masood and Kushdil shah.

    1) Babar Azam
    2) ???
    3) Haris Sohail
    4) Iftikhar Ahmed
    5) Mohammad Rizwan
    6) Imad Wasim

Wahab Riaz performs at National Level games and proves himself to be the best option, unfortunately, the issue is there is a lack of genuine Top class talent

The Era of Javed Miandad or Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis emerging from Local leagues is over. Inzimam Ul Haq and Mohammad Yousif (Youhanna) were last cricket giants from Pakistan

There is less quality Cricket domestically and the players are underdeveloped

Interest in ODI is what improved Pakistani Game in the 70's and 80's.
Difficult to imagine modern players scoring 250 runs or 300+ runs historic innings
    • Sarfaraz
    • Imran Khan
    • Fazal Mahmood

Mr Fazal's bowling figures in some matches was extremely impressive it was normally 1 man vs 11 guys
    [IMG]

T-20, unfortunately, lacks the ability to develop a player's skills

Pakistani Bowlers used to be considered Trash if they gave up more then 15-20 runs in 10 overs. Now they give up almost 10-12 runs an over

Quality is just not there anymore
