*TODAY IN HISTORY*
28th April marks the establishment of No 1 Fighter Conversion Unit 'Rahbars' at PAF Base, Masroor in 1975, with an initial inventory of six FT-5 aircraft. No 1 Fighter Conversion Unit, also known as 'The Cradle of Air Warriors', is renowned for providing a foundation for advanced fighter jet training to newly commissioned officers of Pakistan Air Force.
Following its relocation to PAF Base Mianwali in November 1975, the number of aircraft on the inventory of No 1 FCU rose to 50. The FT-5 aircraft powered by a TJ-5D turbojet engine was a reliable and sturdy aircraft with limited weapon carrying capability, however, it served the purpose of training over 1400 fighter pilots for the Pakistan Air Force over the years. The FT-5 was a Chinese rendition of the Soviet Mig-17 Fresco, and the 50th GD (P) was the first course to fly and train on this venerable fighter trainer.
In addition to it's training task, No 1 FCU played a crucial role in carrying out operational duties during Ops Sentinel 2001-2002. Its aircraft and assets were deployed at different bases near the eastern border of Pakistan for war time operational duties.
After nearly 37 years of service with No 1 FCU, the FT-5 was replaced with advanced K8-P aircraft. The re-equipment ceremony was held on 05 January, 2012 which marked the end of the long and illustrious services rendered by the FT-5 aircraft. No 68th FCC was the first course to train on K-8P aircraft, a low-wing advanced jet trainer with turbofan engine, state of the art ergonomics and tandem seating. Owing to its advanced capabilities, the K-8P is also utilized for ground attack and anti-UAV operations.
