O2 to test Huawei 5G equipment in London

    Financial Times
Nic Fildes, Telecoms Correspondent DECEMBER 21, 2018

O2, the British mobile phone network, is set to push ahead with trials of Huawei’s 5G equipment in January despite growing political pressure surrounding the Chinese telecoms equipment supplier.

In what will be the first deployment of Huawei equipment for 5G since the US and the UK voiced security concerns about the Chinese company in November, O2 will test Huawei’s equipment at 200 cell sites across London.

O2’s rivals EE and Vodafone have already launched 5G trials using Huawei’s equipment, while Three has signed a deal with the Chinese company for its £2bn 5G network build.

An O2 spokesman said that it would proceed with the London trials, including a move to make sites “5G ready” despite the furore surrounding Huawei. “We are testing Huawei radio equipment before we deploy it on some of our cell sites in London. We do this with all vendors in order to drive optimum network performance for our customers,” he said.

Britain is one of Huawei’s most important markets outside of mainland China as it supplies all of the country’s major telecoms companies with equipment. A 2005 deal with BT proved critical in Huawei’s attempts to crack the wider European market and helped transform the Chinese company into the world’s largest telecoms equipment company. Europe is its largest market outside of China.

Looks like the US regime is forcing Huawei to work even harder.

Huawei Expands 5G Testing Across U.K. Amid Security Concerns
    By Thomas Seal
    December 21, 2018, 7:40 AM PST

Huawei Technologies Ltd. has signed contracts with all four U.K. mobile networks to test its fifth-generation wireless equipment, deepening the Chinese vendor’s involvement in Britain’s telecom industry as officials weigh whether to ban the company over security concerns.

Huawei’s 5G gear was already being tested by BT Group Plc’s EE, CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd.’s Three U.K. and Vodafone Group Plc. A few weeks ago, the Shenzhen, China-based company signed a contract to test equipment across 200 sites in London with Telefonica SA’s U.K. carrier O2, spokesmen for Huawei and O2 said. There is no guarantee the tests will lead to supply contracts.

“We are testing Huawei radio equipment before we deploy it on some of our cell sites in London,” said an O2 spokesman by email. “We do this with all vendors in order to drive optimum network performance for our customers.”

The contract was signed “weeks ago,” said the Huawei spokesman -- before scrutiny of the company intensified with the dramatic arrest of its Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou in Canada. The agreement was first reported by the Financial Times newspaper on Friday.
Huawei faces bans in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. over fears that China’s government could use its systems to spy on other countries. The U.K.’s approach is being watched closely by allies, particularly in Europe, as its intelligence service GCHQ has been closely monitoring the security of the company’s equipment at a dedicated testing site.

i think the US fake news media is over-hyping the huawei ban to get others to join them. only bt's subsidiary is banning huawei. the reason could be because their main customer is government, which is understandable. bt is still using huawei 4g equipment, trialing and buying 5g from them. same in japan and korea. huawei is currently trialing 5g network with softbank and kddi. in korea, they just won contract to supply thousands of 5g base stations to lg u+ carrier. in india, too, their government just invited huawei to trial their 5g.
