Taipei, April 15 (CNA) Numerous Chinese military fighter jets and surveillance and transport planes operated near Taiwan on Monday and were closely monitored, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) said in a statement.

A group of planes, consisting of KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft, at least one Xian H-6 bomber, Shaanxi Y-8 transport aircraft, and Sukhoi Su-30 and Shenyang J-11 fighters, flew over the Bashi Channel after taking off from southern China at around noon, the MND said.

Also unconfirmed reports that PLAAF entered Taiwan airspace!

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Chinese bombers and warships conducted drills around Taiwan on Monday, the latest military maneuvers near the self-ruled island that a senior U.S. official denounced as "coercion" and a threat to stability in the region.

The United States has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help provide the island with the means to defend itself and is its main source of arms.

China has stepped up pressure on Taiwan, whose President Tsai Ing-wen Beijing suspects of pushing for the island's formal independence, a red line for China which has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.

"Any attempt to influence Taiwan through threats or coercion, we believe, destabilizes the region and threatens stability in the Taiwan Strait," James Moriarty, chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, said at a ceremony to mark the last four decades of U.S.-Taiwan relations.

China's People's Liberation Army said its warships, bombers and reconnaissance aircraft had conducted "necessary drills" around Taiwan on Monday, though it described them as routine.

China has repeatedly carried out what it calls "island encirclement patrols" in the past few years.

Taiwan scrambled jets and ships to monitor the Chinese forces, its defense ministry said, accusing Beijing of "trying to change the status quo of the Taiwan Strait."

Moriarty said "flying fighter jets and bombers around the island, presumably in connection with what we are doing this afternoon, certainly does not help at all.

"It hurts stability. It damages the cross strait relationship. It damages any attempt by China to win the hearts and minds of Taiwan people," he told reporters at the institute's new $256 million facility, the de facto U.S. embassy in Taiwan.

LOL looks like they got the message... next time we take out the Americans tresspassing on our territory with an airstrike!

The strike formation also included KJ-500 for electronic warfare. Taiwan media is reporting the air defense systems were jammed by KJ-500. I wonder how much payload the H-6K bombers were carrying. I also wonder how many J-20 escorted the bombers (without revealing themselves to radar). This time was just a rehearsal. These exercises will continue until one day it's the real attack! Those Americans in the unofficial embassy better buy some really good life insurance.

Beijing says military drills only routine, tells Taiwan authorities not to provoke antagonism

The spokesman of China's Taiwan Affairs Office on Tuesday dismissed Taiwan authorities accusations, saying the military exercises around Taiwan were part of annual routines aimed at maintaining the cross-Strait peace and stability.

Ma Xiaoguang confirmed that warships, bombers and aircraft were sent to conduct drills in the water around the Taiwan Island on Monday. The goal of the drill was to practice a "combined firepower assault" that included electronic jamming from aircraft under the protection of fighter jets, the People's Liberation Army Daily reported.

Ma said Monday's exercises were part of routine annual exercises, aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as cross-Strait peace and stability.

No one or any party should underestimate China's determination and capability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Ma added.

On Tuesday, Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing-wen said such drills are threatening regional stability, and Taiwan is not intimidated by them.

Ma urged Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) not to provoke antagonism between the mainland and Taiwan. He said Taiwan authorities should stop misguiding local people and escalating tensions, and stop provoking hostility between people on both sides. Such attempts would not succeed, he said.

It looks like air and naval exercises will increase in scale over the next few months until Taiwan elects another DPP President and then the hammer comes down with a massive missile and air strike!

China bombers simulated attack on Taiwan: Foreign Minister Joseph Wu

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - Chinese bombers among a group of 24 aircraft and five ships which approached Taiwan on April 15 simulated an attack on the southern and southeastern parts of the island, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) tweeted Wednesday (April 17).

The fact that China’s People’s Liberation Army sent its planes and vessels close to Taiwan as former United States House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan attended events marking the 40thanniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act in Taipei was already known.
