NEW DELHI: In a clear tit-for-tat, suggesting worsening of the diplomatic standoff between the two countries, Iran summoned Indian ambassador DP Shrivastava in Tehran on Wednesday and protested detention of an Iranian cargo vessel for "unknown reasons'' by Indian authorities.

The envoy was called in by the Iranian foreign ministry within 24 hours of India registering a strong protest with the Iranian envoy here for the "illegal detention'' of an oil tanker, Desh Shanti that was carrying Iraqi crude when it was boarded by Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in international waters.

The summoning of the Indian ambassador has largely confirmed New Delhi's fears that Iran's allegations about Desh Shanti polluting Iranian waters may be a mere smokescreen for illegally taking possession of the vessel. Despite Tehran saying Indian ship was detained for purely technical reasons, India continues to maintain that there was no justification for IRGC to detain the tanker and take it to Bandar Abbas.

According to reports in the Iranian media on Thursday, an Iranian merchant vessel, Diyanat, was detained by Indian authorities around 18 months ago and it has remained stationed at Mundra port in Gulf of Kutch. Iran's deputy foreign minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi is reported to have demanded immediate release of the vessel and also asked the Indian envoy to ensure that its crew members are not subjected to any "mistreatment".

Indian authorities, however, countered this saying that Iranian ship had remained at Mundra because it had fallen foul of international admirality and maritime laws. The ship owners are said to be locked in a dispute with a firm based in a south-east Asian country and needs to pay a certain amount of money to the company before it is released. "This has hardly got anything to do with India and so no parallel can be drawn between the two cases,'' said a source, adding that Indian authorities have also allowed replacement of Diyanat crew several times since the ship docked at Mundra.

The fact that Desh Shanti was carrying 140,000 tonnes of Iraqi crude on its way to India when it was captured by IRGC has caused speculation about Iran's motives. India's crude import from Iraq has gone up steadily, and it now accounts for over 12% of India's total oil imports. On the contrary, imports from Iran went down to a little over 7% from over 10% during last fiscal.

All 32 crew members of Desh Shanti have also had to remain at Bandar Abbas. Despite India sending officials from here to convince Iranian authorities, Tehran continues to insist that the Indian ship discharged its oily ballast into Iranian waters and that it was detained only after an alert was issued by Bahrain-based Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Centre.

It looks the relationship between Iran and India is deteriorating.

Stop this BS ping pong play.

Iran should reduce its demand of 1 million $s and Indians should be ready to pay the amount if they did indeed spill some oil in Iranian waters.

Such a minor issue is turning into a game of egos.

The response from India is very poor after Mynamar incident, China incursions, LOC shooting, Rupees collapse, submarine incidents, Irani demands, etc

What they can do is only options to pay the high amounts of money which will be wasted. I know Indian will be satisfied after pay the prices.

Well honnestly there is no official news about what iran demanded . There are some reports that iran asked India to clean the 10 miles long oil leak and there was no talk about the money.

And that made sense we still don't have a ship designed for cleaning such patch and I heard the ship we are building for such purpose even is not reached 70% completion.

You are right. Actually nobody knows what is happening behind the scenes. Media is also mostly just speculating. Both countries have a close working relationship . I am sure they are figuring out a solution and eventually will. It's a minor issue.

I was a staunch supporter of close Indo-Iran relationship. But now, how this incident is unfolding is quite shocking for me. Iran is simply black mailing India for what ever reasons. If anyone thinks Its just due to oil spillage or for 1 million dollar, then he is a moron. One million is nothing in front of international relations. We have to think rationally that any relationship must be on equal terms. When one side thinks that the other side need us more than we need them, then its bound to happen in the same way as happening now between India and Iran. Indian policy of bowing down at every occasion is not going to work for long.

Iran knows, It has leverage over India as India has invested billions in Afghanistan and Iranian route is the only transit route India has to access Afghanistan. Iran trapped India first by giving access and now exploiting this situation. indian govt should have been followed a cautious approach after stick bomb attack at Israeli diplomat in Delhi. I think Its good that India & Indian public learned the lesson (may the hard way) at the beginning. After all, It did not look reality based or practical to have a more than transactional relationship between 'Believers' & 'Kafirs'.

First of all, this is not a confrontation. It is a leak which is suspected while both the sides' politicians are screwing up each others' image for the sake of political ego. It will simply be solved in the usual way.

Hopefully we can take advantage of this and squeeze the Iranians and get their port and cheaper oil.

Bravo such a manly stance, actually we call it in Iran "Eating carcass". taking advantageous out of a bad situation while people are suffering from it is on the worst thing I have ever heard.
