    The Nimr (Arabic for tiger) is a military vehicle. Development of this tactical vehicle was originally initiated by an Emirati Bin Jabr Group to meet requirements of Jordanian King Abdulah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB). Concept of the new vehicle was first announced in 2000. A prototype vehicle was first displayed in 2001. During the same year production facilities were established in Jordan. First prototypes of the Nimr were developed by a Russian company, subsidiary of the famous GAZ automaker. However soon after the Emirati company stopped cooperation with the Russian company. Further development was carried out in United Arab Emirates (UAE) by Bin Jabr Group. Some other automotive companies from Australia and South Africa were involved in redevelopment of the original vehicle. United Arab Emirates ordered a first batch of 500 Nimr vehicles in 2005 and production commenced during the same year. Deliveries were also scheduled to begin during the same year. In 2011 and 2012 the UAE ordered another 1 200 of these vehicles. In 2009 the Nimr was ordered by Libya (120 vehicles). In 2009 Emirati state-owned Tawazun Holdings signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a joint venture for the production of the Nimr. In 2010 Emirati Tawazun Holdings acquired 60% stakes of the Nimr, while remaining 40% belong to the Emirati-based Bin Jabr Group. Production was moved from Jordan to United Arab Emirates. In 2011 production was re-launched in United Arab Emirates in the new factory. Currently the Nimr is produced in the UAE by Nimr Automotive, and can be considered as an Emirati vehicle. The company is currently a leading manufacturer of tactical military vehicles in the Middle East and North Africa. In 2012 UAE and Algeria signed an agreement for production of armored version of the Nimr in Algeria. Since 2015 the Nimr Automotive is a part of Emirates Defense Industries Company (EDIC).

    In concept the Nimr is similar to the US HMMWV, though there are some differences between the two. Currently newer version of this vehicle are produced.

    The Nimr is a purpose designed military vehicle with good cross-country mobility. In terms of size and payload capacity the Nimr fits the gap between jeeps and light trucks. It can carry loads of up to 2 750 kg, depending on the version. The Nimr can also tow trailers and light artillery pieces.

    The baseline Nimr accommodates driver plus 3 passengers. It has got a cargo area are at the rear. However there are numerous versions of this military vehicle with different cabs, different body types and seating configurations. There is a version that accommodates driver plus 7 passengers. In 2005 a 6x6 version of this tactical vehicle was revealed.

    There are armored versions of the Nimr. These vehicles provide protection for the crew against small arms fire, artillery shell splinters and explosions. An NBC protection system was proposed as an option.

    The Nimr can carry various weapon. Some versions have a universal gun mount ring on top of the roof and can be armed with a 7.62 mm, or 12.7 mm machine gun, or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.

    The Nimr is powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins ISBe 250 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 250 hp. Vehicle has a permanent all-wheel drive. The Nimr comes as standard with a central tyre inflation system. It improves mobility over difficult terrain, such as sand. It is also fitted as standard with run-flat tyres. Winch was proposed as an option.

    The Nimr can be airlifted by a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. The 4x4 version can be also airlifted underslung by a CH-53 helicopter.



    Variants



    Open-topped special forces vehicles. There are some different versions.

    6x6 version. It is a larger vehicle with an added axle, which can carry more payload. A baseline cargo version has a 2-door cab with a large cargo area. It has a payload capacity of up to 5 000 kg. Though there are other cab configurations as well. The 6x6 variant of the Nimr was first displayed in 2005.

    Nimr II is an armored version. It was first publicly revealed in 2007. It is available both with 4x4 and 6x6 configurations. Maximum level of ballistic protection is against 7.62x51 mm NATO armor-piercing rounds. Maximum level of blast protection is against 6 kg of TNT anywhere under the hull. Vehicle is powered by a German MTU diesel engine, developing 350 hp. The Nimr II has a payload capacity of up to 2 500 kg. The Nimr II is in service with some countries. In 2012 UAE and Algeria signed an agreement for production of armored version of the Nimr in Algeria.

    NIMRAD (Nimr Air Defense) is an air defense vehicle, based on the Nimr 4x4 armored chassis. The Bin Jabr Group teamed up with MBDA of France and Rheinmetall Defense Electronics of Germany to develop this air defense vehicle. The NIMRAR has a small turret and is armed with four Mistral 2 man-portable surface-to-air missiles. The NIMRAD was first demonstrated in 2007.

    NIMRAT (Nimr Anti-Tank) is an anti-tank vehicle, based on the Nimr 4x4 armored chassis. It was developed to meet Iraqi Army requirement. As well as the NIMRAD, this anti-tank vehicle was also jointly developed by Bin Jabr Group, MBDA and Rheinmetall Defense Electronics. It has a similar turret as the NIMRAD air defense vehicle, but instead is armed with MILAN and MILAN ER anti-tank guided missiles. The NIMRAT can engage armored vehicles, tanks, buildings and field fortifications. Developers claim that within 12 hours a standard NIMRAD can be converted to NIMRAT, or vice versa.

    GAZ Tigr (Russian for tiger) is a similar Russian 4x4 tactical vehicle. First prototypes of the Nimr were developed by a Russian company, subsidiary of the GAZ. These were revealed in the early 2000s. However soon after the Emirati company stopped cooperation with the Russian company. Further development of the Nimr was carried out in the UAE by Bin Jabr Group. Both parties retained blueprints of the tactical vehicle and the Russians continued development on their own. The GAZ launched production of their Tigr in 2005. During the same year production of the Nimr commenced in the UAE. Currently the Tigr is widely used by the Russian Army and law enforcement forces.

    The Nimr Ajban is a purpose designed military vehicle with 4x4 configuration. It is a new-generation version of the original Nimr, that appeared in 2005. It was originally a joint Emirati and Jordanian project, with production taking place in Jordan. However eventually production was moved from Jordan and in 2011 production of the Nimr was re-launched in United Arab Emirates in a new factory. The Nimr Ajban can be seen as a recent version of the original Nimr tactical vehicle. It is produced by Nimr Automotive. The company is currently a leading manufacturer of tactical military vehicles in the Middle East and North Africa. Since 2015 the Nimr Automotive is a part of Emirates Defense Industries Company (EDIC). In 2017 the UAE ordered 115 Ajban vehicles in 4-door armored pickup configuration.

    In concept the Ajban is similar to the US HMMWV, though there are some differences between the two. The Ajban is larger and can carry more payload. In terms of size and payload capacity the Nimr fits the gap between jeeps and light trucks. This vehicle has good cross-country mobility and can travel over difficult terrain. Due to its military nature the Ajban can withstand heavy use or even abuse, far exceeding that of militarized commercial vehicles, or those based on commercial drivelines.

    The Ajban is available as a 2- or 4-door pickup, or as 5-door station wagon. Also there are specialized versions of this vehicle. Most logistical and utility versions of the Ajban have a payload capacity of around 2 000 kg. All versions can be armored. This tactical vehicle can tow trailers or light artillery pieces.

    Some models of the Ajban have a roof-mounted hatch. A gun ring is proposed as an option. The Ajban can be armed with various weapons, such as 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun, or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher. It also supports a remotely-controlled weapon station.

    There are some optional defensive equipment, that increases survivability of the vehicle. This optional equipment includes smoke grenade dischargers, fire suppression system, protective net against anti-tank rocket launchers, and even NBC protection system.

    The Nimr Ajban is powered by a Cummins ISBe 300 6.7-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 296 hp. Engine is mated to an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission. Vehicle has a permanent all-wheel drive. The Ajban has a number of standard equipment, which improves its mobility over sand and difficult terrain. This equipment includes a central tyre inflation system, run-flat tyres and self-recovery winch.

    There are numerous versions of the Nimr Ajban. Due to the modular nature of the vehicle it can be configured to suit various roles. All versions are using the same automotive components.



    Variants



    Ajban 420 is a 2-door logistical vehicle with a rear cargo area. It can be also configured to carry various shelters.

    Ajban 440 is a 4-door pickup. It accommodates driver plus 3 passengers.

    Ajban 440A is an armored 4-door pickup. Its armor provides protection for the occupants against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. This vehicle can also survive mine and IED blasts. This vehicle has a payload capacity of 1 200 kg. In 2017 the UAE ordered 115 Ajban 440A vehicles equipped with anti-tank guided missiles. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2018.

    Ajban 450 is a 5-door station wagon. It accommodates driver plus 3 passengers. This vehicle is intended for utility and logistical roles, though it can be also used as a command vehicle.

    Ajban LR SOV is an open-top special forces vehicle intended for dessert patrols, reconnaissance and raiding. It accomodates driver and 3 passengers. There is also an extra 5th seat for emergency use. This vehicle has a payload capacity of 3 000 kg.

    Ajban ISV is an internal security vehicle.

    Hafeet is a larger 6x6 version. It is also produced by Nimr Automotive company. The Hafeet uses the same automotive components as the Ajban, but has larger internal volume and can carry more payload.
