There was a 21% drop in fatalities caused by militants in 2017 as compared to the previous year, according to the Islamabad-based Centre for Research and Security Studies.
ISLAMABAD -- Deaths and injuries linked to militancy dropped in Pakistan for the third consecutive year, with 21% fewer fatalities in 2017 than the previous year, according to a new report from a security think tank.

Some 2,057 people were killed and 2,074 wounded for a total of 4,131 casualties over the year, according to a report by the Islamabad-based Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) seen Wednesday (March 7).

That finding continued the downward trend from 2016, in which 2,613 people lost their lives to violence and 1,714 were injured. In 2015, 4,647 people were killed and 1,927 injured, CRSS figures show.

The dramatic improvement in security came after the Pakistani army launched Operation Zarb-e-Azb in June 2014 to wipe out militant bases in the northwestern tribal areas and end a bloody insurgency that has cost thousands of civilian lives since 2004.

It has involved a series of military offensives as well as some attempts to block the militants' sources of funding.

However, the remnants of militant groups are still able to carry out periodic bloody attacks, and analysts have long warned that Pakistan is not doing enough to combat the root causes of extremism.

The report warned that even with the security improvement, new militant groups have appeared in the country.

It also said that the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) had claimed responsibility for killing at least 143 people -- more than twice the 68 people the report said were killed by the group in 2016 -- while a branch of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed 99 fatalities.

Agreed. However if you think about it terrorism flourished in Pakistan because of
    • enabling conditions.
    • lack of political/military will to sort it out.
And it never was about lack of capability. The focus has been provided by and will continue be driven by Chinese influence - ever subtle but potent all the same. This will be done behind the scenes [stick] and publicy through CPEC projects/investments [carrot]. Terorrism and religious radicalism will scupper what the Chinese have planned for Pakistan. A modern business friendly, connected country playing a vital part in OBOR and over the horizon a major Chinese military and economic partner. Something akin to how USA and Europe fit together. Or Japan/South Korea fit within the US orbit. I believe the Chinese influence will increasingly focus the military/political elite of Pakistan toward this goal.

Yup. Did you notice that total casualties for 2017 are just a few percent less than 2016? The implication is that militant attacks are getting weaker and/or emergency response is getting better, not that the general level of militancy is declining. And as the article itself notes, new militant groups continue to pop up in Pakistan.

Militancy is all about deaths. That is why it is lethal. Did you know the number of people killed terrorism/murders/crime etc in Pakistan is not lot differant from the annual US cull? Take a time to look at the figures and you will find some 'hoods' in USA are probably more dangerous then large parts of Pakistan.

Its time to invade Nangarhar, Kunar, take over the damn place, kill as many TTP and ISIS as possible. Afghanis will surely cry, use it as a bargaining chip, if they agree to our demands, they get their land back. Otherwise, naturalize the locals and let it roll.

This time border management is in place so ISIS will have trouble getting through.

But to truly kill terrorism Fazlullah's head must be delivered and Kunar and Nuristan either bombed to a pulp or invaded. Need to be proactive and put a buffer in place to stop future proxy war attempts.

Afghanistan needs to be balkanized and Pashtun parts to be absorbed by Pakistan. This needs to be the end game.

Either that or bomb with depeleted uranium to make Afghan border towns unhabitable. Perhaps even land mines everywhere including remote intersections.

It all begins with deporting any Afghan in Pakistan so these plans can be carried out without retribution.

Killing Fazlullah isn't a silver bullet. The real problem is the perpetually failing state in Afghanistan. Unless that is contained, the cycle of narco terrorism isn't going anywhere.

Alternatively, expedite the border security process, and start targeting commanders and financiers with SSG/ISI

Kind of like how Mossad dealt with certain figures through the 80s/90s
