German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on the 15th that despite the great achievements of the two German unifications over the past 28 years, there is still a structural gap between the eastern and western federal states, and the government is committed to solving this problem.

In a video released on the same day by the Prime Minister’s website, Merkel said that the per capita gross national product of the eastern federal states is only about 73% in the west, and fiscal revenues are also significantly lower than in the west. This means that the government must find ways to level the gap between the eastern and western regions in the areas of scientific research, large enterprises, and structural unemployment.

The eastern German federal states refer to the capitals of Germany, Saxony, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Brandenburg.

Merkel said that the current level of pensions in the eastern federal states has reached about 96% of the west, and it is hoped that by the year 2024, pensions in the eastern and western regions will reach the same level.

The development gap between the eastern and western regions is a major problem faced by German society. In order to eliminate the gaps and promote integration, the German government has adopted a series of measures, including the collection of "solidarity tax" to support the construction of the eastern region, and regular meetings of the governors of eastern states.

External support cannot fundamentally change the economic development of a region.

Due to the rigid influence of the former Soviet Union system and coz of East Germany’s thinking has not been liberated. The lack of vitality in East German enterprises, the relative backwardness of East German development are inevitable.
