PESHAWAR: The Mamond tribe in the Bajaur tribal region on Wednesday announced the formation a lashkar (militia) to fight against terrorists and added that large-scale preparations were under way in this regard.

Thousands of people from five border villages of Mamond tehsil have fled their homes after the expiry of an evacuation deadline set by the political administration of Bajaur because of the likelihood of a military operation in the region.

Sources in the administration had told Dawn that security forces and the administration had finalised arrangements to launch operation in the border areas of Mamond tehsil.

The political administration of Bajaur Agency on Monday asked people living in five villages of Mamond tehsil — Nakhtar, Ghakhi, Mula Killi, Gohati and Kitkoot — to evacuate their homes by Tuesday morning.

In the past, elders of the Mamond tribe have lent their support to the administration in maintaining the government's writ in the region.

These developments comes as the Pakistan Army is engaged with Taliban militants in North Waziristan tribal region.

The military operation named Zarb-i-Azb was launched on June 15 following a brazen Taliban-claimed attack on Karachi's international airport and failure of peace talks between government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan negotiators.

About 900,000 persons from North Waziristan tribal region have been displaced so far in the wake of the operation, according to figures released by the Fata Disaster Management Authority (FDMA).

Standing with PA is the best thing to do for these loyal tribesmen & they should prove their love for Pakistan by helping PA in fight against rented terrorists.

and what were they doing before when we kept suffering for decades? honestly we need to disarm the tribal belt and bring them under pakistani fold, this is one breeding ground for making outlaws like talibans and outlaws

no more lashkar please, today they will fight for pakistan, tomorrow against pakistan and form outlaws and chopping heads

bring all tribals under pakistani laws now, this will eliminate the lashkar bazi and out laws and terrorism

appreciate their efforts but its much better for pakistan what i have stated above

I dont blame you. Its the fault of pakistan army that they dont highlight the role, level of participation, sacrifices and importance of aman tribal lashkars against taliban in their war. Its due to these tribal lashkars, that army didnt need to do swat-scale operations in dir, buner and lakki marwat.

i didn't know that dir was a tribal area

there was an army operation done in buner i don't know about lukki marwat, but despite the fact that i really appreciate the lashkars and their efforts and sacrifices, but its also a fact that lashkars which will be let to assert their authority and law enforcement today will not accept the rule of law if they do something bad and this will not be good for pakistan to maintain rule of law in tribal belt, the duty of law enforcement is not civilian but of army and the police, lashkar bazi should be finished and these guys must be disarmed for the longer peace in the region

if any lashkar wants to fight then they should be brought under the terms and properly recruited for pak army and given designations and division designations and only then they should be alloowed to carry weapons and fight

Tribal lashkars are not specific to FATA, all pashtuns have tribal society and organization.
About your concern, pak army never armed them with heavy weapons nor any funds were provided to them (due to the fear that they might use it for different purpose). Due to which most of the tribal lashkars, very lightly armed, got wiped out by taliban with heavy weapons. After that taliban killed one jirga member after another who organized these lashkars. In this whole time, they didnt had the protection of pak army, even though it was promised to them.
In KPK, most of the aman lashkars proved successful as taliban there were weaker than them.

note that tribal lashkars are only raised in an emergency, they consist of volunteers. And in case of taliban, they have always assissted police and army. The state itself request tribes to raise aman lashkars and patrolling parties

its duty of police and army to enforce the law not the tribal, dir according to another pashtun member is not a tribal region, and pak army needs to change their policy, tribal culture encourages to for outlaws like TTP so pak army need to change their policy and pak govt must also address this matter
