ISLAMABAD: A five-member Malaysian delegation led by Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Malaysia for South Asia on Infrastructure Dato Seri Samy Vellu called on Minister of State/Chairman Board of Investment, Saleem H. Mandviwalla to explore business and investment opportunities in the country.

The High Commissioner Malaysia, Dato' Ahmed Anwar Adnan also accompanied the delegation.

Dato Seri Samy Vellu informed BOI that a Malaysian construction firm Bina Puri Holdings Bhd had received a letter of intent in November from the Pakistani National Highway Authority (NHA) for the expansion of the four-lane Karachi-Hyderabad highway.

The same company is also involved in residential and industrial projects in Lahore.

The proposed M-9 motorway will cost an estimated Rs 18.2 billion and the M-9 will
be one of the busiest highway in Pakistan, with 23,000 vehicles approximately every day.

Saleem Mandviwalla said that Pakistan has large infrastructure needs in the form of roads and highways, gas, oil pipelines and terminals, port development, shipping, airports, aviation, railways, logistics management, energy and power.

There is also unsatisfied and ever expanding demand for office space, apartments, shopping malls and recreational facilities.

He further added that Malaysia has an impressive record of expertise, experience in construction, infrastructure and real estate sectors.

Joint ventures, Private - Public partnerships between Malaysian and Pakistani Companies backed by liquidity available under Islamic finance are the way forward in which both countries would be able to go ahead of others.

After signing the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries in 2008, the trade has crossed $2.5 billion till now and exports to Malaysia have risen up to 56.16 per cent till November 2011.

The investment remained very low in 2010-11 which is $ 5.5 million only.

The delegation also showed interest in the NewIslamabadInternationalAirport, in Fateh Jang.

Malaysian Multimedia Development Corporation and the Pakistan Software Houses Association are also seeking strong partnership in the information and communication technology sector.

A number of key Malaysian companies including Tenaga National (power sector) Telekom Malaysia (IT sector) have invested in the telecom, infrastructure, construction, housing, and land development projects.

The Malaysian national company, PETRONAS, is also involved in exploration and drilling of gas and oil.

we should be constructing these motorways ourselves, we have the talent and the ability. But we are cursed with short sighted leaders like zardari and Nawaz that stifle any progress the country could make.

I was just going to write somewhat the same thing.

Pakistanis on this forum yell against GCC countries for being lazy and so on. What about in Pakistan?

Chinese come and build Malaysians come and build all contries come and work in Pakistan but Pakistanis cannot build or work honestly. In another thread a person said that in pakistan there are people from 200 countries, well UAE has the same number or slightly more and just comapre the two countries (UAE and Pakistan). Pakistanis are lazy to work and just don't want to work with honesty.

Just taking part in some Airforce Competitions and paying under the table to recieve the best pilot awards and the best soldier in the region award. And the result is what we see in the drone strikes and border intrusions even the police is known for 'effectiveness". I say let the police be having foreign manpower also at least they will bring some sense of security. Pakistanis are not good in running any government instition in Pakistan, just hiring foreigners to work for them will be fine. It would be good if governemnt institutions and state assets are handed over to foreigners to run them as Pakistanis are too lazy to work honestly

And so much of saying that we have world famous engineers and doctors and army and bla bla bla. and almost the whole country is in ruins. Just compare the living standard of the common man in 2012 with that in 1947 and you get the answer of how hardworking Pakistanis are and how valued the life of a common man is in "Islamic" Republic of Pakistan.

Foreign or private investment means the project will be completed before time and there is less chance of corruption.

But in India we have mostly Indian companies and domestic private firms doing this. At least better than getting dominated by foreign companies in this regard.

No. Many of them are won by foreign companies in bidding process.
What is wrong in malaysian company constructing, they are going to use local product and people anyway.

That's why I said mostly. Never said its wrong by any regard, just intended to clarify that influx of those foreign firms is there but not at very big scale.

Mumbai Monorail is being built by Malaysian company Scomi Rail and they are also providing monorail coaches. Malaysians have expertise in some sector, nothing wrong in giving contract to them..

Although I have a lot about the Malaysian firms building houses and luxury apartments in Karachi, but after some years there were no sound of any progress but still I am wishing that these firms which have a good reputation should come to Karachi for building affordable luxury apartments that are durable and easily adjustable for Karachi-ites. Are there any on going project of Malaysia other than roads and highways.?

As far as i know the Payback period from a local firm NESPAK was way less than what was being provided from Bina Puri. The president has a hand in awarding it to Bina Puri (no speculation)

I would much rather have a Malaysian company doing it rather than a pakistan one in the current circumstances.

Because then, it will be the same old story, the contractor gets his money and runs away, major corruption in the equipment procurment, and the usual stuff.

And to top it off, when the road is complete, it sinks into the ground and you have to relay it again and again and again.
