    London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has condemned plans to hold an anti-India march in London on the Kashmir issue on Diwali next Sunday (27), saying it would deepen divisions in the UK capital and called on the organisers and prospective participants to cancel the protest rally.

According to Met Police an estimated 5,000-10,000 protesters plan to commence their march from Richmond Terrace near Downing Street and converge outside the Indian High Commission in London.

In response to a letter by London Assembly member Navin Shah, Mayor Khan said: “I absolutely condemn the plans for a protest march to take place on the auspicious day of Diwali, in the vicinity of the Indian High Commission in London.

This march will only deepen divisions at a time when Londoners need to come together. That is why I am calling on those organising the march and all those considering taking part in it to think again and cancel their plans, said Khan in the letter dated October 18.

He said that his City Hall office would be working with Scotland Yard to ensure a robust policing plan was in place for such a march.

In response to Shah’s request to consider seeking permission to ban the protest due to public disorder fears, he added: “As you know, the power to ban marches of this nature lies solely with the Home Secretary, not with me as the Mayor of London.

“I am copying this letter to both the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Cressida Dick, so they can clearly see the extent of my concerns about this march.”

Shah, in his letter, recalled the violent clashes outside the Indian mission on August 15 between diaspora groups marking Independence Day and British Pakistani and separatist groups.

“I understand why many British Indians are so deeply concerned. Many have felt deeply threatened and worried since the previous protests outside the Indian High Commission. I can assure all Londoners that anyone who acts unlawfully will be accountable to the police,” Khan responded.

The so-called President of Azad Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan, and Azad Kashmir prime minister Raja Muhammad Farooq Haider Khan are expected to participate in the march dubbed the “Free Kashmir” rally.

The latest letter exchange over the issue of Kashmir in the UK comes as Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn issued his response to another letter issued on behalf of over 100 British Indian organisations, condemning the party’s stance on Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the Indian government’s decision to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

He repeated his previous acknowledgement that some of the language used in an emergency motion passed by the Labour Party last month could be misinterpreted or lead to misunderstandings about Labour policy, both in India and among the Indian diaspora. But he stood by the party’s view that it remains gravely concerned at the ongoing human rights crisis in Kashmir .

The British Indian outfits, who had called on him to reconsider the damaging motion calling for international intervention in Kashmir, reacted with anger to the hugely disappointing response and said it showed that the party continued to disrespect British Indians and democratic India.

“It’s obvious that the Labour Party are either oblivious or just could not give a damn about the concerns of our community and the damage being done to UK-India relations,” said Manoj Ladwa, a UK-based media executive and among the many diaspora figures raising concerns over the Labour Party’s perceived anti-India stance.

One thing that Mr Khan doesn't consider is the effect of Indian media on Indian Hindus around the globe. Whatever we do, they wouldn't let things settled down between Muslim and Hindu communities. So, in these circumstances, I would hear to my people, even if they were wrong.

    Hang on. Hang on.

I like you S Khan. However, what's it got to do with British "Indians"?

If your aim is to exclude the sanctity of a Hindu holy day from a political dispute between British Pakistanis/Kashmiris and British Indians...if that is your intention, then why not be consistent and state your concerns for "HINDUS", rather than "INDIANS"?

There are Pakistani Hindus in England and non-Indian Hindus in England who should rightly be not bothered on their holy day. Likewise, there are loyal Indian muslims who have nothing to do with divali but should rightly draw the ire of pro-kashmiri protests as equally as Hindutva type Hindus.

I get what S Khan is trying to say but it is he who is stupidly conflating Hinduism with the phenomenon of Hindutva and Delhi's aggression in Kashmir.

    Excellent catch
It seems that Mr S. Khan thinks the word Indian is synonymous with Hindu and excludes all others

He is just providing lip service to maintain the dignity of his position. Do not read too much into his statements.

The march isn’t supposed to coincide with Diwali. This idiot doesn’t realise its 27th October that was the day that Indian troops invaded Kashmir.

27th of October is Diwali, this year. Besides, the kind of Hooliganism displayed last time by the protesters made him make those comments.

    Read before blabbering.
We don't hold processions on Diwali. It's celebrated on High Commission premises.

I think he cares less about religious sanctity, and more about communalism. Sure it's at the behest of Kashmir, but he's the mayor of London. Morally wrong.

What hooliganism? A few people getting a bit shouty is hardly comparable with a state sponsored lynching, they could just move the march a street away from the building,

There are no state sponsored lynching in India. Also this is not about internal issues in India so no point deflecting.

Sadiq Khan said he is reiterating his backing for the teaching of healthy relationships of all kinds and warns that intolerance and discrimination have no place in London, following the spread of misinformation about the lessons and protests in other parts of the country.

Mr Khan has previously spoken out in support of LGBTQ+ inclusive relationships education in both primary and secondary schools, and wrote to the education secretary in August to back the lessons.

In his letter, the mayor emphasises the need for children to feel safe and included while learning.

He highlights the importance of this given research showing young LGBTQ+ people are more likely to experience mental health issues, self-harm and homelessness.

In addition, the letter references recent rises in homophobic attacks, showing that it remains as important as ever that young people learn to respect healthy relationships of all shapes and sizes.

"Our schools must be places where all children feel safe and included, regardless of their gender identity and sexual orientation or that of their families," he said in the letter.

"Young people should be able to learn about healthy relationships of all kinds, and that includes LGBTQ+ relationships.

"I am proud to be mayor of a city that embraces differences and celebrates diversity.

"Bigotry, intolerance and discrimination have no place in London.

"This is why you have my total and full support as you equip students to make safe and informed decisions, show that LGBTQ+ relationships are part of everyday life, and ensure that all young Londoners can feel proud of who they are."

The mayor also congratulates schools on the fantastic job they have being doing despite the government's cuts, and calls on them to continue to work together in the fight to tackle violent crime and hate crime as well as breaking down gender stereotypes to help young Londoners reach their full potential.
