Lieutenant General Angus Campbell named as Australia's next Defence chief

    Lieutenant General Angus Campbell has been formally announced as Australia's next Defence chief by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Canberra.

    The change is one of several at the top ranks of the military being announced today.

    The former special forces commander played a key role in the operation to restore order in East Timor and served as a national security adviser.

    He has served as the Chief of Army since 2015, and replaces the departing Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin .

    The position is said to come with a salary of more than $800,000 AUD.

    "I just like to say that I deeply appreciate the confidence and trust being displayed and given to me by the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence and the chief defence force," he said.

    "It's a great privilege and honour to serve."

    He said it would be a "extraordinary responsibility" but he will do his best for the ADF.
