Kashmir is India's 'internal' issue: US envoy

NEW DELHI: With Kashmir reportedly being excluded from the UN list of unresolved disputes, the US today said it was an "internal issue" of India and should be resolved bilaterally through negotiations with Pakistan.

"This is an internal issue for India. It is a bilateral issue between Pakistan and India, to discuss term, scope, character and pace," US Ambassador Timothy Roemer said.

He was asked to comment on UN excluding Kashmir from list of unresolved international issues.

"The (US) President ( Barack Obama), I think was very articulate on this issue of Kashmir. This is an internal issue for India," he said on the sidelines of a function here.

Roemer noted that during his visit, Obama had said that he encouraged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and people of India to engage with the government and people of Pakistan.

He underlined that whenever India and Pakistan talk, it will be at the "pace and character" of the two countries.

On Obama announcing support for India's bid for permanent UNSC membership, he said the US will now work to realise the promise.

"We are very proud about President's announcement that he is unequivocally and fervently in favour of India having a permanent seat in a reformed United Nations. It was one of the many highlights of (his) visit to India..We will be working to see that happen," Roemer said.

Rubbish! Indian policy under the tutelage of it's sponsor has been to reconstruct history - How? The issue of Kashmir is in essence a conflict between Pakistan and India arising out of 1947 -- the issue can only be resolved by negotiations between Pakistan and India.

However, India are, at least publicly indicated that it is not open to such discussions -- the new twist is to use the issue of terrorism to further distance India from the possibility of negotiations - or to demand that the results of any negotiations come before the negotiations themselves - doing a Israel, if you will.

Will it work? Certainly in the US and in India -- will it work for the captive Kashmiri and Pakistan? I don't see how.

see actual work both way,as far as India is the one who control Kashmir,India is the sole authority who's consent is required for any argument or agreement, during all this yrs no world power had shown any intension to dig it's head in this matter proves how much this case is dead, anyway currently no one even want to attract the wrath of India by interfering in this matter.

Kashmir is considered a part of Indian territory and it will remain same,no need to beat any dead horses, what the whole point in all this negotiation's,after the end of negotiation is Pakistan peacefully going to declare that they accept Kashmir as the part of India,no.

So the whole point is that the negotiation r fruitless,Any govt in India that announce Kashmir as the part of Pakistan will b doomed with the following seconds, and the same will happen to the Pakistani govt if it announce that they r closing the chapter

And by the way u urself admitted in ur post that India is not keen on any negotiation, very much seems, this is India's internal matter and Pakistan even after so much rhetoric has as much as say in this matter just like any other nation

If it works for rest of the world then Pakistan may align herself to that of world's stand on Kashmir, that's the idea might be.

BTW, if foreign secretaries are to be taken as credible source, then Pakistan and India almost talked a solution of Kashmir during Mush era. Some say that was the reason Mush had to go. ;)

Indeed it may and may not. The world is also changed by swimming against the currents ---what matters is how it plays in captive Kashmir and Islamabad -- As far as how it plays in the US, well, their relevance or irrelevance something Indian policy makers can decide for themselves, with a little help from others.
