P-17A frigate still on track despite industrial mishap, says GRSE

    Key Points
    • GRSE’s part in India’s P-17A frigate programme is unaffected by a crane collapse, the company has assured
    • Move to outsource construction to smaller companies across India may have mitigated effects from mishap
Indian shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilder & Engineers (GRSE) has maintained that the company’s part in the Project 17A (P-17A) frigate programme is unaffected by a crane collapse at its Kolkata facility.

The 250-tonne gantry crane collapsed in April 2017, after what has been described by the company as “a near cyclonic” storm.

However, satellite imagery analysis by Jane’s suggest that the facility’s assembly hall, where hull modules of the P-17A frigate project are being put together, has suffered extensive damage from the crane collapse.
