According to the Italian newspaper La Republica, the Italian government is set up to soon approve the MEGA defense deal with Egypt that includes 6 Frigates including 2x confirmed FREMM Bergamini, 24 M-346 trainer jets, 24 Eurofighter Typhoon jets, 20 Falaj II OPV and 1 Military Satellite.

According to Italian reports, Italy is currently discussing with Egypt one of the largest arms sales for Rome since World War II. The potential arms sales to Egypt would be worth between 9 billion to 11 billion euros.

The reported deal would include the delivery to Egypt of an additional four FREMM frigates, 20 offshore patrol vessels, 24 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft, 20 M-346 jet training aircraft and an observation satellite.

Italy has become a major trade partner for Egypt, while its arms industry has grown to become one of Egypt’s main suppliers, as such sales have increased from 7.4 million to more than 871 million euros from 2016 to 2019, according to annual parliamentary reports.

A former Egyptian diplomat told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity that Egypt’s relations with Italy are strategic and that the arms deals point to improved relations.

The diplomat praised the Egyptian policy of diversifying its sources of armaments, and said Italy is an important partner of Egypt in the energy-rich eastern Mediterranean region.

Egypt relies on the Italian government-owned ENI, which is the largest gas and oil producer in Egypt, to produce nearly half of Egypt’s petroleum wealth

Despite domestic pressure, Italy sees the military deal with Egypt serving as a guarantee to build strong relations with Cairo so as to preserve an active role in the eastern Mediterranean, a significant hotbed in the region.

Italy is a co-founder of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, established in January 2019 by Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, with the purpose of promoting natural gas exports among its member states.

On the other hand, Italy is keen to not lose one of the world’s top arms importers. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s March 15 report said Egypt was the third-largest arms importer for 2016-2020. During that period, Egypt’s arms imports grew by 136% compared with 2011-2015, with Russia as the top exporter to the country, followed by France, Germany, the UK and the United States.

He stressed that Egypt enjoys strong military relations not only with Italy but also with France, Germany, the UK, the United States, Russia and China. Since the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, the Egyptian military has been seeking to diversify weapons sources instead of relying on one source — a trend that has been more accentuated under Sisi — in a bid to increase military capabilities to face the regional challenges and preserve national security, he said. “The countries of the world are also keen to strengthen their relations with Cairo.”

Brig. Gen. Khaled Okasha, member of the National Council for Combating Terrorism, seems to concur with Mazloum, as he said that Egypt enjoys military relations with major countries in the world and has a well-studied and clear scientific plan to modernize and develop its various weapons in the army, such as the navy and air defense, to maintain its national security.

“Egypt’s keenness on diversifying its sources of armament contributes in strengthening its army by bringing in arms from different branches of armed forces from various countries,” reported Al-Monitor newspaper.

Okasha explained that Egypt’s great position and its pivotal role in the region put it at risk of great challenges, and therefore it is essential for Cairo to increase its military capabilities to preserve its national security. “In this context, several major countries, including Italy, deal with Cairo, as they are well aware of its great role and share common interests. Egypt maintains stronger ties with France, Germany, the United States and Russia, and does not count on one country only for armament,” he concluded.

They are buying both rafales and eurofighters???
That's a very stupid expensive and logistically burdening move
the main advantage of EF-2000 over Egyptian F-16C is that Egyptian F-16 can't able to carry any BVR and Egyptian EF-2000 will able to carry BVR (Meteor)
Don't they have rafales for that??

I think both will have Meteor i mean Egyptian EF-2000+RAFALE, in my thinking, you should ask Egyptian members for confirmation or denial
Meteor is compatible with all European jets and is offered too
But what's the logic of buying two similar capability jets with having to setup separate service training facilities plus supply lines??

Meteor and Aster 30 (on frigates) are banned.
You mean on EF-2000 brother???

yes brother i am thinking same but thinks that EF-2000 is more intended toward air superiority and secondary strike/CAS roles/missions and RAFALE is more intended toward strike/CAS and anti ship role etc etc , so i think Egyptian EF-2000 will have meteor in near future, just my 2 cent brother

We don't know yet for sure until a credible announcement from either the Italy=ian government or Egyptian government which the latter will most certainly not say anything until it is pretty obvious that they are there or a deal is struck and announced by Italy. Just the way the Egyptian military operates.

Why? Please explain in details so we can see what you actually mean. Most people say that but never offer any actual and solid information to back that up. Just FYI, Egypt, prior to this amazing modernization operated US, French, Russian and Chinese fighters and did perfectly fine. So we have a lot of experience with much older jets that needed much more maintenance per hour of flight. These new machines are all digitally programmed for maintenance and are actually easier!

Don't they have rafales for that??
Why have only one platform that can carry the best missile out there. Having two platforms or more is MUCH more powerful. It's about strength as well as other reasons.

A couple of reasons: 1) The Italian mega deal was mostly for the awesome and incredible Berghamini FREMM frigates as well as opening a new relation with their arms procurement. The Italians are some of the BEST naval builders dating back to even before the Roman empire and this is only my opinion that has nothing official to back it up BUT, we bought the first ever export Mirage 2000s in 1986, 20 of them and now, I bet the number is even lower than 10 active ones and they were almost like a special operations unit. We would rarely see them and recently they've performed some major attacks in Sinai against ISIS and are very successful, and were ready to go into Libya had the Turks not backed off Sisi's Red Line, but they're old. They need replacement VERY SOON and I think instead of separating the Rafales (which are supposed to relieve pressure on the F-16s) they might just retire the 2000s and replace them with the Typhoons. Keep them at their own, dedicated base and use them for special operations and that shouldn't cause any logistical problems whatsoever and the diversity is a part of the plan. Why does the EAF have to be the same as others with only 3 different platforms? Our situation requires this type of offset in types and sources.

I could be completely wrong but most people don't realize that we had a rather large fleet of 4 different types of 4th gens and operated them perfectly fine. The Navy is doing the same thing but no one is complaining about that! lol

Induction of Rafale's and Typhoon's is very ambitious. The big question is the IFF system; does it have the ability to lock and shoot Israeli jets? Turkey being a NATO member lacked the ability in F-16C/D hence replaced it with homemade IFF.

Typhoon is a beast in air to air. Typhoon gives Egypt decisive edge over Turkey's F-16C.
Typhoon is a pain in the backside for the europeans to maintain.
It is a plane engineered for a role that is from the cold war,
on the basis of jobs and politics.
I really doubt Egyptians would do something like this.

It is all computerized maintenance now.. much easier than before.. these are Tranch 3 and 4 we are talking about..So most of the previous problems have been fixed .. it is a good time to buy the Typhoons..
