KARACHI: Italian manufacturers and suppliers of military hardware, particularly missile defence systems, are eyeing Pakistan as a potential market to export their products and technology.

Representatives of leading defense equipment manufacturers, including MBDA, Italian developer and manufacturer of missiles; Elettronica, Integrated Electronic Attack and Self-Protection Systems developer; and Fincantieri, an Italian shipbuilding company on Thursday held a press conference onboard the visiting Italian Navy ship ITS Carabiniere. They briefed the press about their companies' expertise and willingness to explore Pakistan's market for defence products.

Earlier, Francesco Pagnotta, the commanding officer of the visiting Italian ship, briefed the media about the ship and her visit to South-East Asia and Australia.

ITS Carabiniere is an anti-submarine warship that was delivered to the Italian Navy in April 2015. ITS Carabiniere is fitted with latest generation platform and combat systems based on state of the art military and civil standards.

ITS Carabiniere's deployment is aimed at strengthening the ongoing cooperation with some trans-regional allies and developing relations with potential partners. The main theme of the naval campaign is maritime safety and surveillance, cooperation strengthening and naval diplomacy, Pagnotta said.

He said that the visit to South East Asia and Australia had started from Italy on December 20 last year. He said it reflected an international vision that converged and outlined this century as the "Blue Age". "The Blue Growth is considered a key factor for sustainable development of the countries where the sea is a key resource for business growth, employment and technology," he said.

The visit of Italian navy ship to Pakistan will strengthen bilateral relations and open new avenues in the area of defence collaboration and cooperation between the two navies.

The ship has reached Karachi after visiting Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Australia and Singapore where the frigate joined exercitations with local navies and took part in LIMA 17, held in Malaysia. The deployment of the ship was organised with the support of Fincantieri, Leonardo, MBDA Italia, Elettronica and Telespazio.

Italian defence attaché and officials of Pakistan Navy were also present in the press conference.

@Tank131 @Penguin @cabatli_53 I wonder if MBDA took the initiative and offered the Sea Ceptor for the F-22P and, potentially, MILGEM (i.e. LF-2400).

Keep in mind Pakistan uses Spada/Aspide 2000. CAMM-ER, the extended range variant, is intended to provide a "common solution" to the air, land and maritime environments. It has been in development since 2013 by MBDA Italy and AVIO Spa for Italian MoD, to update/replace Italian Air Force SPADA batteries, Italian Army Skyguard-Aspide batteries and Italian Navy vessels (to begin since PPA s and LHA[31] and for other vessels update. So, there are multiple things to discuss with the military of Pakistan.

Just an inside joke about tagging Zarvan. Whenever he comments on something, the chances of it happening drop by 99.9% :P (see here).

Seriously, Leonardo and MBDA might be interested in the PN's talks with Turkey for the MILGEM; be it the Ada or LF-2400, there is an opportunity to outfit the vessels with sensors, weapons and even helicopters. It will be pricey though, so there's no guarantee they'll be chosen. I can see Saab providing a compelling solution too, and that might be as capable but also more affordable.

Im not sure Italy will manufacture frigates with Pakistan, Turkey is more likely to do that.

FREMM is priced out of Pakistan's financial capacity. To put it another way, for the cost of one FREMM ($676 million) the Pakistan Navy can get three smaller - but still high quality - corvettes or light frigates. Yes, even these smaller ships could have VLS with medium-range surface-to-air missiles. In this case, the PN would likely go for 6-8 light frigates instead of 2-3 FREMM.

Used Eurofighter Tranche 1s apparently cost $60-75 million an aircraft (with logistics package), which isn't bad. However, these are relatively obsolete aircraft now as they do not include AESA radars, and I'm not sure if one can deploy stand-off range munitions (i.e. Ra'ad) from them. If anything, one would have to take up a custom upgrade path, and that isn't going to be cheap.

As for the Aster 30/SAMP-T. That might be plausible. Long-range SAMs aren't cheap and we had a Pakistani official reportedly tell the media that there's interest in the S-400. If that is the case, then the long-range SAM program could be relatively big-budget and the Army and Air Force would be wise to take a look at every available option.

Bro, Pakistan and Italy has a SAM experience before with Spada-2000 missiles so A likely deal with Italian supplier to build Pakistani Milgem variant is likely from my perspective. We are almost sure that Pakistani corvette/frigates will have VLS so The missile suppliers from S. Africa to Italy, China will introduce their interests to supply related missiles for Pakistani warship programs.
