Iranian Parliament Requires Gov't to Develop Armed Forces' Missile Capabilities

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian lawmakers in an open session of the parliament on Monday approved a bill which mandates the government to develop the country's missile capabilities.
According to the law ratified by the lawmakers, the government is required to allocate five percent of the public budget to boost Iran's defense capabilities.

The Iranian parliament's approval also necessitates the government to strengthen Iran's defense power through developing the country's missile production capabilities and developing the air defense capabilities at different short-, mid- and long-range levels.

The Iranian parliament's approval also underlines development of electronic warfare and cyber defense capabilities.

The parliament also approved development of Iran's air fleet for different offensive, defensive, combat and logistic missions by relying on modern aircraft, choppers and drone systems as well as updating and arming the existing drones' capabilities.

The Iranian lawmakers further mandated the government to develop Iran's naval fleet by equipping it with state-of-the-art vessels and submarines.

The parliament's approval also deals with boosting military capabilities of combat units and rapid reaction brigades of the armed forces.

In relevant remarks in late December, Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli underlined that Iran's missile and radar systems that have multi-folded in recent years are fully prepared to confront any threat.

"Our missile, electronic tapping and radar systems have multi-folded and we can confront the modern threats of the world," General Esmayeeli told reporters in Tehra.

He also stressed that Iran's Air Defense units have been deployed in some 3,700 locations across the country to give a crushing response to enemies' threats.

Also in September, General Esmayeeli said that the skilled Iranian Air Defense Forces are using home-made state-of-the-art weapons and equipment to defend the country, he said that they have discouraged the enemies from launching a military attack against Iran by enhancing their preparedness and diversifying their options to stand against different types of threats.

General Esmayeeli made the remarks two days after the country's Armed Forces put into operation the home-made 'Nazir' radar system with the capability of detecting radar-evading targets and fighting against electronic warfare.

"Nazir radar system was put into operation and from now on, no radar-evading flying object can enter the Islamic Iran's skies without permission," General Esmayeeli said.

"The radar is special to detecting the small flying objects and MQ1, RQ4 and U2 aircrafts and can easily detect and trace ballistic and cruise missiles and most importantly, the radar-evading aircraft," he added.

Nazir is a long-range and high-precision radar system which is highly capable of detecting targets in low radar cross section and is resistant to radar evading and anti-radar missiles.

General Esmayeeli said that Iran will put into operation its home-made version of the sophisticated Russian S-300 missile defense system, dubbed as Bavar (Belief) 373, in the near future, adding that the two systems play complementary roles for each other.

"The radar and missile defense system, Bavar-373, is a powerful and fully indigenous supplement for the S-300 defense system which will be put into operation soon," he said.

"The S-300 and Bavar-373 systems will be highly lethal for the enemy," the Iranian commander added.

He concluded that Iran is also building two other defense systems named Talash 2 and Talash 3.

Also in late November, Iran tested its state-of-the-art missile systems in its large-scale air defense drills codenamed Modafe'an-e Aseman-e Velayat 7 in the Southern parts of the country.

The military drills included the participation of the forces debuting the Talash (Endeavor) missile defense system on the Southern Khark Island to destroy mock intruding drones.

This means Iran's military budget will be ~ $14 Billion USD (Not including the cash that goes to government owned defense companies, Various Security organization,.....)
I believe that means over all Iran's Military budget will be around $21- $25 Billion USD

That means a 5% increase in budget, which would be around $5 billion increase...

5% of that is $14 Billion USD and doesn't include government owned Defense companies & some of the security services that are under a different budget

Plus It's a bit misleading because Iran's military budget was never 2% of the budget it was 2% of the GDP! and if we go by GDP it will be about the same among as well $21-$25Billion

Iran should develop a missile that covers entire Europe.

Why doesn't Iran go for 4500km-5500km ballistic missiles?

Too expensive unless you have a nuke on top of it. Besides we have little to gain from hitting Europe and much more to loose.

Because without a nuclear warhead it simply wouldnt be worth it militarily or economically to develop a weapon like that and then produce it in the numbers required to have any sort of effect.

Then why does Iran have 2000km weapons? Ballistic missiles are not very effective in conventional military terms..as they are not very accurate. Cruise missiles are therefore more effective to target enemy from a stand off range

Anyways, Iran should keep developing and enhancing its industrial capacity across the board.

Part of it is simple economics, its just a lot cheaper to build a large force of short and medium range missiles than it is a comparable force of intermediate or intercontinental range missiles.Conventional ballistic missiles when used in large numbers can potentially be very effective, the key is salvo firing and saturation of the target, the main thing is to have enough of them.Originally irans solution to the problems of accuracy was to use different types of submunition cluster warheads, ultimately iran went for a terminally guided warhead emad which probably has a cep measured in the very low tens of meters[probably 100ft or less].
As for cruise missiles these also have their place and again the strategy is very similar ie large numbers, ideally one would use both ballistic and cruise missiles in combination to attack a target, another option would be to use the cheaper cruise missiles to finish off a target that has been crippled by a ballistic missile strike. Its not a case of picking one over the other as both have different strengths and weaknesses, personally I see cruise and ballistic missiles as complementary systems that enhance each others effectiveness.
Certainly irans enemies take the threat posed by irans ballistic missile forces very seriously, after all one only has to look at the vast sums spent on systems like arrow,thaad,pac3 by irans enemies.
