JAKARTA, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Indonesia said on Friday it was worried about an arms race in the region after neighbouring Australia announced plans to acquire nuclear-powered submarines as part of a new Indo-Pacific security alliance with the United States and Britain.

Known as AUKUS, the alliance will see Australia get the technology to deploy nuclear-powered submarines as part of agreement intended to respond to growing Chinese power.

In a statement on Friday, the Indonesian foreign ministry noted with caution Australia's decision to acquire the submarines and said it was "deeply concerned over the continuing arms race and power projection in the region".

The foreign ministry called on Australia to maintain its commitment to regional peace and stability, and reiterated its respect for international law.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison told ABC radio on Friday that Indonesia's defence and foreign ministers had been informed about the plans and he intended to speak with Indonesian President Joko Widodo soon.

There have been growing tensions in the disputed South China Sea, a strategic waterway with potential oil and gas riches, as countries try to push back against China's maritime claims.

The Indonesian navy said on Thursday it had increased patrols around its Natuna islands this week after it said Chinese and U.S. vessels were detected in the country's waters.

The chairman of a fishing alliance in Natuna said Indonesian fishermen had spotted six Chinese ships, including warships, in Natuna waters this week and also regularly saw U.S vessels.

"We are worried that we will be caught in the middle of a war and that it will be unsafe for us to search for fish," said Hendri, who uses one name.

China has not claimed the Natuna islands, but says it has nearby fishing rights within a self-proclaimed Nine-Dash Line that includes most of South China Sea - a claim disputed by some Southeast Asian countries and not recognised internationally.

Australia can make major acquisition since the country is already rich, Indonesia should not be triggered and should keep thinking strategically and with long term point of view since USA is still very strong even until 2035. No one dare to challenge USA even until 2040. There will likely be no war happening in SCS since it is stupid to do that, but armed race and bullying smaller countries will likely to happen and will increase in the intensity.

Minimum Essential Force program should be delayed until 2029, waiting for our economy to grow larger and improving our industry competitiveness first until Jokowi term is finished in 2024 November. More focus should be on infrastructure and industrialization ( including local defense industry) during the last Jokowi 4 years term. RCEP is just years to be effective, so industry competitiveness and financial healthiness should be the main priority while in relation with defense program Indonesia should put more effort to grow its own local defense industry production capacity, profitability, and sophistication.

Then we can start having bigger defense budget starting in 2026 when our economy will already be at least 1. 6 trillion USD inshaAllah and many of our local defense industries current programs have already reached mass production stage inshaAllah. This include frigates, submarines, fighter jet, UCAV, cruise missile, GCI radar, ballistic missile, amphibious IFV, etc inshaAllah.

2030 forward then we have to launch Essential Force program.

I would not bet no war is going to happen because nobody is mad enough to risk it’s existence. The problem is human as such is full of madness. the chinese are all out to test the limits and patience of other countries. They are unpredictable.

We are sitting on a powder keg that just needs to lit up.

Every country in the region is up in arms.
If I was Indonesia I would increase the military spendings massive in scale.
Thinking the world is a peaceful place is naive.

You shall remember that the nuclear sub Australia acquire can also be used on Indonesian navy. Indonesia and Australia don't see eye to eye on issue of west papau. There are still plenty of score yet to settle between them.

Australia see themselves as superior white and shall be telling non white Indonesian how to behave. That is all the while the mentality maintain until now.

Most affected will be Australia immediate neighbours and it is not surprising Indonesia is the first to express its dissatisfaction and unhappiness.

Now Australia is more of a threat to them.

Indonesia warns it will 'adjust' policies if Australia moves Israel embassy

Threat joins backlash from Middle East over possible move of embassy to Jerusalem

Indonesian officials have threatened to “adjust” policies towards Australia if the Morrison government decides to move Australia’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The warnings from officials in the Indonesian foreign ministry and ministry of defence – first reported by ABC’s AM – add to a growing backlash from 13 Middle Eastern and north African nations and the Palestinian National Authority against the Coalition’s plan to reconsider the location of the embassy.

On Thursday Guardian Australia reported that the Australian spy agency, Asio, had warned the government the proposed shift may “provoke protest, unrest and possibly some violence in Gaza and the West Bank”.

The leak of that Asio bulletin has been referred to the Australian federal police for investigation, as Scott Morrison continues to defend his plan by arguing there is no evidence “at this time” of any planned violence as a result of the announcement.

An Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman, Arrmanatha Nasir, said “the issue of Palestine is very important to Indonesia and the people of Indonesia”.

“Of course we will adjust our policy or our actions depending on the situation but again, I will not even try to predict what actions we will take,” he told ABC’s AM.

This does have ramifications for Indonesia i.e. with a better armed rival right on their doorstep. Australia was key in the splitting away of East Timor.

Nope, it was USA and Britain who give us armed embargo after our army shot many East Timor civilians during the demonstration in Santa Cruz.

USA embargoed Indonesia since 1995-2005 while Britain since 1998 If I am not mistaken.

Australia is not a factor of East Timor case and it is Indonesia agaisnt whole Christian Western Europe + USA and Indonesia was also hit by Asian Financial Crisis since 1997-2002, we need to ask loan to IMF and you guys know who are the lender countries in IMF...

Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1976 and it becomes our weak point when it comes to Western nations, particularly after USSR collapse. East Timor is Christian majority region.

Yes that's right but their troops were instrumental in securing it under the UN flag.

They also oversee any major lapses of security.

Australia is the first country to volunteer to send UN peace keeper to East Timor. They are together with US , biggest advocate for East Timor independence. They are the one pressuring UN to do it.

Nope, Australia never done thing like that. It is European countries and then USA who forces us. Australian public yes, but not their government

Australia volunter after Indonesia made decision to conduct election in East Timor. Australia as the hands of Western nations in Asia of course will do that, while whole ASEAN members dont want to do that sensitive thing.

Basically we are against whole Christian world, similar like Christian South Sudan case

Indonesian occupation (1975–1999)[edit]

A demonstration for independence from Indonesia held in Australia during September 1999
Indonesia's occupation of East Timor was marked by violence and brutality. A detailed statistical report prepared for the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor cited a minimum of 102,800 conflict-related deaths in the period 1974–1999, namely, approximately 18,600 killings and 84,200 "excess" deaths from hunger and illness, with an estimated figure based on Portuguese, Indonesian and Catholic Church data of approximately 200,000 deaths.[43] The East Timorese guerrilla force (Forças Armadas da Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste, Falintil) fought a campaign against the Indonesian forces from 1975 to 1998.[citation needed]

The 1991 Dili Massacre was a turning point for the independence cause and an East Timor solidarity movement grew in Portugal, the Philippines, Australia, and other Western countries.

Following the resignation of Indonesian President Suharto, a UN-sponsored agreement between Indonesia and Portugal allowed for a UN-supervised popular referendum in August 1999. A clear vote for independence was met with a punitive campaign of violence by East Timorese pro-integration militia supported by elements of the Indonesian military. This allowed the sending of the multinational peacekeeping force, INTERFET, which was formed by Australia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and New Zealand, with aid from the United States, to restore order and aid East Timorese refugees and internally-displaced persons.[44] On 25 October 1999, the administration of East Timor was taken over by the UN through the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), headed by Sergio Vieira de Mello.[45][46] The INTERFET deployment ended in February 2000 with the transfer of military command to the UN.[47]
