Indonesia approves proposal to procure ex-South Korean corvettes

In an apparent about-turn, the Indonesian Ministry of Finance (MoF) has approved a previously rejected proposal for the country to purchase ex-Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) Pohang-class corvettes with foreign-sourced loans.

The approval was confirmed in a notice issued by the MoF to the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (MoD) on 7 December. A copy of the notice was provided to Janes by a source close to the matter in late January 2023.

Janes first reported in October 2022 that the MoD had requested to procure at least one ex-RoKN Pohang-class corvette as a stopgap measure for the Indonesian Navy. The ministry had also proposed that the procurement be financed with funds from a foreign lender. This proposal was rejected by the MoF then, but no reasons were given.

Details provided in the 7 December notice indicate that this proposal was re-submitted by the MoD on 28 October, in addition to a list of other proposed procurements, such as shipborne munitions. The MoD has now cleared the MoF to take on up to USD21 million in foreign loans to fund the proposed acquisition of up to three Pohang-class corvettes.

“The acquisition of foreign-sourced goods and services must take into account the involvement of local companies and how these companies can contribute to the strengthening of Indonesia's strategic industries,” the MoF notice stipulated.

Jakarta, IDM – The Chief of Staff of the Japanese Army, General Yoshida Yoshihide, hopes that in the upcoming Latma Super Garuda Shield 2023, it can include airborne and amphibious forces. He said this when he met the Chief of Army Staff (KSAD) General Dudung Abdurachman who visited the Japanese Army Headquarters in Ichigaya, Tokyo, Friday (3/2).

Yoshida is very proud and grateful for the military cooperation between the Indonesian Army and Japan which has been going very well, especially in the field of exercises, regarding the involvement of the Japanese Army Airborne forces during the implementation of the 2022 Latma Super Garuda Shield.

In this regard, Dudung welcomed Yoshida's wishes. He said that currently the Latma Super Garuda Shield 2023 is in the planning and maturation stage at the TNI Headquarters level.

In addition, Dudung hopes that the cooperation of exercises between the two Armies can be developed also for Latma for natural disaster management and humanitarian assistance given Japan's capabilities and its highly tested defense equipment in the field.

Next, Dudung also encouraged the implementation of cooperation in the field of education while still sending Army personnel to attend education in Japan, including Akmil cadets at the National Defense Academy and Army officers in Seskoad Japan.

This 2001 PhD paper by-then USAF Major Denhard noted that Mach 1.1 "strikes a good balance between increased missile range and adequate maneuverability".

KF21 with 4 missiles in semi recessed belly will make its STEALTYNESS less compromised despite carrying 4 AA missiles (block1and 2).

If KF21 uses Wingman drone (which is already planned to get it in the future), then even its block 1 and 2 airframe can still maintain its low observable level ( if only carry 4 missiles on its semi recessed belly) despite carrying more bombs/missiles because additional missiles/bomb are inside its Stealth Wingman drone internal weapon bay.

Sukhoi, Hawk are already get approval from Finance Minister to undergo major refurbish and upgrade.

23 F16 C/D upgrade I think will likely be approved as well by Finance Minister. Planning Minister has already put the program in Blue Book (Approved program for 2020-2024). 23 F 16 C/D will be already around 8-10 years old as well in 2025 after their first refurbishment in USA, so need to have another refurbishment program to prolong their life time into another 15 years beside upgrading their capabilities.

I expect the refurbishment and upgrade program of 23 F16 C/D is approved in late 2023 and contract is given in middle of 2024 and become effective contract somewhere in second semester 2024, after all of F16 A/B completes their refurbishment and upgrade program. Just like happening with F16 A/B Falcon Star Program, I hope Indonesian Aerospace engineers are included and hopefully some F16 C/D refurbish and upgrade can be handled inside Indonesian Aerospace complex, not only in Indonesian Air Force Maintenance Depo.

Stop gap measure to wait KF21 program reaching its mass production phase in 2026 inshaAllah.
