    Few Information About Indian Auto Sector


    1. India's passenger car and commercial vehicle manufacturing industry is the sixth largest in the world, with an annual production of more than 3.9 million units in 2011.

    2. In 2010, India beat Thailand to become Asia's third largest exporter of passenger cars.

    3. As of 2010, India is home to 40 million passenger vehicles. More than 3.7 million automotive vehicles were produced in India in 2010 (an increase of 33.9%), making the country the second (after China) fastest growing automobile market in the world in that year.

    4. India's automobile exports have grown consistently and reached $4.5 billion in 2009, with United Kingdom being India's largest export market followed by Italy, Germany, Netherlands and South Africa. India's automobile exports are expected to cross $12 billion by 2014

    5. India, is the second largest producer of two-wheelers in the world. In the last few years, the Indian two-wheeler industry has seen spectacular growth.


    6. According to New York Times, India's strong engineering base and expertise in the manufacturing of low-cost, fuel-efficient cars has resulted in the expansion of manufacturing facilities of several automobile companies like Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen and Maruti Suzuki

    Hero MotoCorp

    Hero Motocorp Ltd., formerly Hero Honda, is an Indian motorcycle and scooter manufacturer based in New Delhi, India. Hero Honda started in 1984 as a joint venture between Hero Cycles of India and Honda of Japan. The company is the largest two wheeler manufacturer in India. The 2006 Forbes 200 Most Respected companies list has Hero Honda Motors ranked at #108.

    In 2010, when Honda decided to move out of the joint venture, Hero Group bought the shares held by Honda. Subsequently, in August 2011 the company was renamed Hero MotoCorp with a new corporate identity. On 4 June 2012,Hero Motocorp approved a proposal to merge the investment arm of its parent Hero Investment Pvt. Ltd. into the automaker.

    It's really not Indian auto industry. MNCs are "using" India to produce / assemble their vehicles cheap. Indigenous Indian auto industry as in S Korea, Malaysia or China is really miniscule.

    FYI, we have been rolling out US GM assembled vehicles since 60's. When Indira came to visit in '72 Sheikh presented her with a posh shiny Vauxhall Viva sedan which was assembled in Gen Habibullah Khan Khatak's Gandhara plant at Chittagong. The jaws of Indians dropped so much that an ENT specialist had to be called to hammer them back to position.

    We still assemble, and had a good export market in Bhutan till India arranged this to be sabotaged.
