The Indian Army (IA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with state-owned hydroelectric power corporation NHPC Limited to build four ammunition storage tunnels along India's mountainous borders with China and Pakistan.

Signed on 25 April, the MOU envisages the construction of three tunnels along the northern borders with China, and of a fourth one contiguous to the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the region of Kashmir between India and Pakistan. All tunnels are expected to have a storage capability of 175-200 tonnes of assorted ammunition.

Scheduled for completion within 24 months of a contract being signed, the project is expected to cost INR150 million (USD2.14 million).
