Good idea. Had this approach been taken earlier with the Arjun, the Tejas.. and other projects instead of trying to "go it alone". Perhaps better and more importantly timely results would have been reached.

Nahi yaar; those are not "mini-tanks".....they are "bombshells" that can destroy any tank. :D

    Why the hell not?
All that India will seek and get is specific technologies for specific purposes and for specific equipment used in the Tank.
The Design Concept and Philosophy will be local to meet local doctrines. Plus there has been enough experience gained on the Arjun project . Do you have any idea how JVs work as distinct from Licence-manufacturing?

    @Abingdonboy @Capt.Popeye

FMBT was supposed to be a lighter tank than Arjun ie less than 55 tons

How will this goal be achieved considering that Israeli Merkavas and Indian Arjun tanks
BOTH are heavy at 62 tons

Does Israel have the experience of making a lighter tank

The thread is more than just the PAF, it is the lives you lose when you continue flying old machines and there is sufficient evidence for that.

going alone has both pros and cons, one weighs upon these pros and cons before starting the endeavour. However, if one decides to just do it for the experience then the result is the delays and the connected loss of lives to older aircraft.

My question to you: If you can design and make a heavy tank, will it be impossible for you to do the same for a lighter tank from the ground up? :azn:

Armata from Russia will be 55 Tons and a 3 man crew

One the one hand Arjun is supposed to be heavy BUT Israel has NOT
made any lighter tank than Merkava

So how will India be benefitted other than just getting a Smoothbore 120mm gun

Arjun is heavy because it is a 4 man crew tank.IF army agrees to 3 man crew tank with auto loader than weight can be brought down to upto 55 tons.
PS-Arjun's weight is about 67 ton not 62

You seem to be prone to jumping to conclusions.
Is it said anywhere that there will be a JV to design a Joint-Product to be used by both countries?
The JV may extend only up to a consultancy arrangement.

No one has to compromise their design philosophies. Like I said it is about building on each other expertise, there are areas Israel is superior and areas where India is- combine this into one product and you will surely have a world beater. Given this is India's FMBT and not being targeted for use by the IDF then naturally it will be design from the ground up with the IA in mind.

This was said a long time ago but there is no doubt the FMBT will be heavier than the Arjun Mk.2 this is the trend the world over for MBTs. There was a period when people assumed that APS and ECM would allow for the introduction of far lighter MBTs but now this has been abandoned and more and more armour is being put on the tanks increasing the weights. The FMBT will be no different.
