India has successfully tested a ‘satellite killer’ missile that has far-reaching strategic implications.

In a televised address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the success of ‘Mission Shakti’ after the anti-satellite (A-Sat) missile intercepted and destroyed the spacecraft at an altitude of 300kms.

It propels India into an exclusive club of Russia, China and the US that possess such a weapon, reports the Times of India.

The 18-tonne missile, fitted with two solid rocket boosters, blasted into space to hit the 740-kgs satellite dead centre just three minutes after its launch over the Bay of Bengal.

Satheesh Reddy, head of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation, told local media the missile’s successful test came only two years after it was approved by the government.

“We got into mission mode only six months ago,” he said.

Reddy also said the A-Sat achieved accuracy to within a few centimetres and the weapon is capable of reaching much higher altitudes.

Yesterday’s trial of the ‘satellite killer’ missile has important strategic implications for India.

India can now match China’s ability to intercept and shoot down ‘enemy’ satellites – destroying an adversary’s eyes and ears in space.

Indian defence chiefs have been concerned about China’s advances in military space projects, which tested its own ‘satellite killer’ in 2007. Beijing is also developing futuristic laser weapons.

Modi said India had attained “global space power” status after the A-Sat test.

The announcement is Modi’s latest bid to flex India’s military muscle as his party seeks to retain power in polls beginning April 11.

After 40 Indian soldiers were killed in a February suicide bombing in disputed Kashmir, India said it retaliated with a “surgical strike” on a terrorist camp in Pakistan.

Afterward in an air skirmish, Pakistan shot down one of India’s Soviet-era fighter jets, prompting scrutiny of India’s aging military hardware.

Modi said the new capability is “not against anyone,” and that India’s policy remains against the use of weapons in space.

time for a fourth force to be raised
Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force and finally Pakistan Space Force

SUPARCO only makes satellites they cannot shoot them down someone else is responsible for that job.

Making satellites is something that even university students wll do. Launching them in space is real job. And shooting them down is at another level.

Well, one thing is now confirmed.

    - Indian can shoot down stationary targets, in near space. -

    - Shooting down moving targets few thousands feet over their own territory is impossible for them.

you just shot a Sat 300 km in altitude. So I have no problem with it. Because Pakistani remote sensing Sat is 670 km in altitude and for India to reach there will take another decade. China shot down a sat 645 km in space and Russia was not satisfied with them as a capable shoot down of Sat. Sorry bro I don't know what Modi feeds you but you are not there yet.

Yes they can shoot down a low orbit satellite but they can do jack with JF-17 or F-16 or anything that PAF sends to kick their bums. Carry on gloating you petty minded Bhartis.

A satellite that India shot down in lEO was moving at 8km/sec

I don’t believe these Indians. They got their rear handed to them and now Modi is trying to score cheap points with this insignificant satellite shooting.

Pakistan should make most of this opportunity and work on its own satellite killer missile if we already haven’t. We have every justification to do so.

sunny we know more than you do.

here this is where india shot down the sat and there was a US spy plane in this very area providing tracking to the missile lol world is laughing at India for this stunt and claiming it to be their own activity. hahaha. USA tracked the target and provided the missile with targeting data. lol. even a noob like me know the latest coordinates of your latest launched remote sensing sat.

    Sat shot down.jpg

Location of US plane which provided missile tracking. USA did it to make Modi win elections lol.

Another joker, I just came back after reading your comment that "India cannot track satellites above LEO".

Explain how a spy plane provide tracking of satellite to a missile?

You're right, you are a noob, but I'm no aerospace engineer either, but conventional wisdom suggest, we use tracking stations around the world to track satellites.

    Here's the list. Link

The one in Indonesia may or Thiruvananthapuram (in India) may have provided tracking.

So you mean to say that India already told USA that you were going to shoot down a SAT in leo and USA just came there to monitor how good you people are? LOL. Just tell me why did usa knew before hand? and what was this RC-135S doing there? Please first go and read about cobra ball capability and then come back. It is meant to track missiles and re-entering objects.

Nope off course not. Enlighten me!!
Please don't tell me that they go around the earth in an orbit on a fixed spot assigned to them. :o::o:

Really!! Wow, I thought the are stationary.
Don't they move in a fixed orbit!! With the movement of the Earth!!

If you don't know anything about missile launches, then I suggest you stop wasting my time.:disagree:

We give warnings to the commercial ships in the area prior to the launch of any missile from Kalam Island. US maybe looking into every missile launches we do who knows.

The point is, India do not need US support for launching missiles, but if that helps you feel good about yourselves then why not. Believe whatever you want.:enjoy:

Viola! This satellite travel at around 8000 m/s in LEO.

You are talking about Geosynchronous satellites, where the satellite stays stationary with respect to earth.
