Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Monday announced that he would contest the 2018 general election from Karachi.

Khan, addressing a press conference in the city, lamented the poor state of affairs in Karachi, claiming that the city had been "abandoned" by political parties. The PTI chief said that the parties in power had failed to "own Karachi".

Last month, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry had hinted that Khan might contest the election from Karachi but a constituency had not yet been agreed on.

Khan said that the city was not just infested with garbage but also with corruption. "Karachi is seen as a cash cow by the people in power," he claimed, adding that infrastructure and institutions in Karachi had been "ruined".

"Mafias prevail in this city. The tanker mafia for example — citizens do not have access to water because of it... The Rangers have been posted in the city because [political parties have] ruined the police," he said.

The PTI chief promised his party would bring in a "directly elected mayor" who would solve Karachi's problems with his "team of experts".

He stressed the need to elect a mayor who has administrative powers and financial resources to deal with the challenges being faced by the city.

"Major cities like New York and London run smoothly because their mayors are strengthened," he said.

Good. Sindh and especially Karachi is ripe for the taking if PTI is serious.

PTI has not invested enough political energy in Karachi. It needs to do it badly.

PTI only won 1 seat from Karachi and that too from my area. The guy did nothing afterwards.

If IK is planning to contest from Karachi then it's safe to assume it's gonna be from our constituency. IK is also planning to contest from 5 different seats around Pakistan. If he wins all of them then he will only keep 1 seat and leave the rest - meaning by elections will be held on govt. resources and people will have to waste there time again in polling.

So you are concerned about money spent on by-elections but have no problem with the billions that the likes of Nawaz and Zardari have stolen?

Then don't vote. Your time is more important than nation's well being.

Should I go to polling station and vote for a guy who's previous guy didn't deliver anything in last 5 years knowing that if he wins, he will probably leave the seat and I will have to go to polling station again to vote for his candidate again probably the same guy who didn't deliver anything in previous term? Or should I simply stay at home? Oh, you already told me to stay at home. Thank you :-)

Not sure what you expect a single PTI MNA to do for you in Karachi. The funding still comes from the Government.

Maybe the thinking should be that voting for them could win them a majority and remove the current government and bring in new blood.

In the UK most people vote for the party policies but I guess Pakistanis vote for what the local candidate can do for them only. That is why PPP always wins and Sind and PMLN in Punjab, etc. Mindset has to change to take Pakistan in a better direction.

Is it a safe seat for PTI or he planning to contest from 2 seats? Can't wait to see the results of Pakistan general elections later this year.
