Pakistan may allow cotton import from India through land route as prospects of gradual restoration of bilateral trade ties have brightened after the new ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC).

According to a local media report that cited sources in the Ministry of Commerce, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood may take a decision on whether to import cotton and yarn from India next week.

The report claimed that the issue of cotton shortfall had been brought to the notice of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan whereas a formal summary will be presented before the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet after a principled decision is taken in this regard. “In-house deliberations have already begun but the final decision would be taken only after seeking the premier’s approval.”

The arrival of seed-cotton into ginneries plunged 35pc to 5.57 million bales as of January 31, 2021, the lowest level witnessed in Pakistan’s history in the last two decades.

Given the situation, this year’s cotton imports may touch the highest levels seen in the country’s recent past, putting an extra burden on current account position. Cotton production was recorded at 8.487 million bales in the same period of last year.

Of the total production, textile mills bought 5.046 million bales while 70,200 bales were picked up by exporters. Currently, only 90 ginning mills are functioning in the country.

Cotton outputs in the country have plunged historic lows mainly due to poor seeds and lack of technology and innovations, threatening the livelihoods of growers and textile sector’s viability.

Pakistan had severed trade ties with India after New Delhi unilaterally annexed Jammu and Kashmir by ending its special status granted under Article 370 of Indian constitution. The trade ties between both the countries can help minimise cost of production and ensure sustained food supplies.

I guess money is the new Pakistan priority instead of Kashmir.

@El Sidd Did you read the news of reinstating of article 270? Maybe I missed that news...
I keep saying this but Pakistan cannot fight domestic terrorists funded by India and sending terrorists to IoK at the same time. IoK is at this point lost case. Time now is for peace between India and Pakistan.

The cost of terror to Pakistan has been proportionally bigger then to India. Kashmiris are traitors anyway who became part of India hoping they will get independence. Let them figure that out on their own.

Modi ki Yaar government has disgraced Pakistan with her Baniya mentality.

The incompetent PM laments that India funds his cabinet yet does not move an inch after giving such grave statements in midst of imposed 5th gen warfare.

Jinxing CPEC and conflicted priorities...

Pakistan is pulling a great expense in constructing a future decoupled from rest of South Asia... becoming part of BRI and it's flagship CPEC. Having hostile relations with an imperial India, ever seeking to expand and usurp possibly the whole state of Pakistan and beyond, and an amicable and beneficial relationship with it's hinterland in the west and of China.
Is Pakistan backing itself in this endeavor?

Uzbekistan, one of the largest producers of cotton can become a cog in Pakistani supply chain... simultaneously a market for Pakistani goods and services. Something that can pay for the infrastructure investment and take it forward on its own two legs.
Is that an intention?

Instead Pakistan is essentially allowing India to consolidate its positions after a tough year all around... while Pakistan miraculously fared quite well, or at least seemingly.
Cui Bono?

Pakistan would be better off signing a preferntial purchase contract on market prices with Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey.
They have a solid record of cotton exports. India is by far the biggest cotton producer but a substantial amount of our deficit can be met via these muslim countries. We just have to play our cards right and sign a market price based preferntial agreement which would be a win win situation for all.

Sitting in US, you propose to do Maths....Look at your Democrat Govt...I guess they are more adverse to Pakistan than your Trump.

On topic, You say India is in deep shit, PDF Keyboard warriors say the same....unfortunately, people who run the world economics and economies have a different view (including IMF)...so you please continue with your Maths...
My view..peace with India is a Welcome sign...we need them more than what they need us for, at the moment.
