Afghan woman Sharbat Gula, the iconic face of refugee struggle who was deported from Pakistan a few days ago, will travel to India soon for medical treatment.

Gula became a worldwide face after her photograph appeared in the National Geographic Magazine in 1984. She was deported from Pakistan to Afghanistan on Wednesday on charges of falsifying identity papers.

In her 40s now, she has been offered treatment free-of-cost by the government for which Afghan Ambassador Shaida Abdali expressed gratitude to India.

“The iconic Afghan Sharbat Gula will soon be in India for medical treatment free of cost–Thank you India for being a true friend!,” Afghan ambassador Shaida Abdali tweeted.

Gula, popularly known as the ‘Afghan girl’, is reportedly suffering from Hepatitis C besides having some other health issues. After fleeing Afghanistan as a young child, Gula spent decades in Pakistan and was arrested recently on charges of possessing fake identity documents.

Gula, a mother of three, is said to undergo treatment at Bengaluru hospital. Gula’s image, with striking green eyes, photographed by award winning photographer Steve McCurry had made her the face of refugee crisis in Afghanistan. Pakistan has been criticised for deporting Gula.

We must respect her for what she has been through and lets not treat her like the way Pakistan treated her and got a bad image all over the world. She is not any Afghan but the girl the world sympathies with and treating her in India will give us a good international image.

Who cares what this is as long as that poor Afghan girl is being benefited. Let's not be cynical here.

not being cynical... we spend very little on healthcare in India and cannot afford to give it to foreigners.. I am okey with opening hospitals in afganistan or training their staff which will genuinely benefit afgans.. this is clearly cheap politicking...

Cheap, expensive politics or for whatever reasons,,that doesnt matter,,it is the govts decision n a good one at that.

Bottomline,,Afghan govt wants it n she will be getting treated.if not India,,thn Afghan govt cud have opted for Iran,,they got very good medical facilities as well

The way Pakistan treated her? How did we treat her? She broke the law and she had to pay for it; we aren't going to let her walk away from committing a crime just because she was on the front-page of a natgeo magazine some 30 years ago.

She should have been simply deported instead of arresting her. Andy why this refugee was forced to make fake papers in the first place? No one makes fake papers out of choice. Pakistan on humanitarian grounds should have given her asylum just like Malala got in the UK.

Every year thousands of Afghans come to India for treatment, nothing new here except she has been the cover girl of national Geographic.
