IAF successfully tests extended range version of BrahMos missile from Sukhoi jet

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force on Thursday successfully test-fired the extended range version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile against a ship target in Bay of Bengal from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet. The range of the missile is 650 km.

With the successful trials, India achieved significant capability to carry out precision strikes from Sukhoi against land and sea targets over very long ranges.
Earlier in May, India had successfully carried out the first test of the extended range missile from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet in the Bay of Bengal in a demonstration of deadly precision strike capability from long standoff distances.

A 800-km range variant of BrahMos, which is a conventional (non-nuclear) missile that flies three times the speed of sound at Mach 3.0, is also undergoing “developmental trials” at present. This missile variant will be ready for production towards end-2023

At present the Sukhois can carry only one and in future it will be able to carry a maximum four NG missiles.

The operational radii of action of the SU-30 MKI is 1500 kilometres which increases to over 2000 kilometres with one aerial refuelling. This would increase further if the aircraft would land back at A&N Island airbases. The coverage from Car Nicobar Islands extends into significant parts of South China Sea. Distance from Jamnagar or Pune, to the Gulf of Oman is 1,100 km and Gulf of Aden 2,100 km. Operating from Pune or Jamnagar airbase, IAF can cover significant distance westward. It can be seen that the aircraft can cover from the Gulf of Aden to well past Malacca Strait and significant parts of northern Indian Ocean

Block III has advanced guidance and upgraded software, incorporating high manoeuvres at multiple points and steep dive from high altitude. It can engage ground targets from an altitude as low as 10 metres for surgical strikes without any collateral damage

They can input preset coordinates to have the missile seeker look for targets in a particular grid.

I was referring specifically to Naval targets - for land strikes the Sukhois radar is irrelevant

Anything in IAFs hands will be useless when time comes, best India can do is missiles.

Our CM and MAR series have built-in radar, so the firing jet's radar doesn't have to have that range.

On your comments, there is nothing new that they've tested. They've increased the range of an existing platform we've known about for a decade now. And we have our own supersonic missiles and may be more are being acquired / looked at / tested, etc. This test does give us a reason we can use to Test something. But it doesn't have to be because again it's not a "new threat environment".
