The Republic of Korea (RoK)’s Hyundai Motor said it is considering building a car plant in Southeast Asia with Indonesia and Vietnam being possible locations.

The intention came from the intense political ties between Beijing and Seoul after the RoK allowed the US to deploy its anti-missile defense system THAAD in the country, hurting Hyundai and other Korean firms that are highly reliant on the Chinese market.

Hyundai expects its China sales to reach about 900,000 vehicles in 2018, a recovery from last year, according to a company spokeswoman.

Hyundai has not disclosed estimates for 2017 China sales but the figure of 900,000 would still be far below its production capacity of 1.65 million vehicles in its biggest market.

The company aims to sell 7.55 million vehicles in 2018 amid sluggish global economic growth that reduces demand in numerous key markets.-VNA

Streets in Indonesia are mostly overcrowded and jammed, I don’t think you need more cars on them. You should concentrate on HSR sponsored by your friend China.

Well considering we had the infrastructure in name of spare parts producents, the availabilty of research center in car producing and wide support like the availabilty of skilled workforces, tax incentive and electricity doesnt come to surprise if Hyundai built their plants here. And not mention the large market compared to Vietnam.

Indonesia car market is bigger but Vietnam has more potentials. We are closer to China and Indochinese mainland. Most Vietnamese ride on bikes and in 5 years the picture will be different. I expect large parts of 2,000 km long north-South super highway to be complete. Driving car will make more fun.

Hyundai should imagine what will Vietnam and Indonesia look like in 5 or 10 years, which country is more promising. I am pretty sure, we will make a good offer to Hyundai.

Hyundai Motor to Promote Indonesia as Production Base in Southeast Asia

Hyundai Motor Co. is seeking to secure a commercial car production base in Indonesia. The company will aggressively target the Indonesian and Southeast Asian markets, which are expected to grow explosively, by securing production facilities in the form of a joint venture with local companies.

According to industry sources on August 14, Hyundai Motor announced its plan at the 25 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in Tangerang to build a commercial car production plant in Indonesia as a joint venture as early as the second half of next year and expand sales in earnest. The company is expected to establish a 50-50 joint venture with a local company. When Hyundai Motor secures the factory in Indonesia, it will have the third overseas plant following Sichuan Hyundai and one in Turkey.

With a goal of beginning the local production in the second half of 2018, Hyundai Motor is currently injecting complete knock down (CKD) into the factory and testing if it can actually produce cars. After the completion, the factory will have a production capacity of 1,000 units and expand it according to demand in the future. Indonesian media said, “The factory will be able to supply products to not only in Indonesia but also neighboring major countries in Southeast Asia.”

Hyundai Motor joined hands with Korindo Group, a Korean-Indonesian conglomerate, in 2016, and had assembled and sold CKD in Indonesia from 2007. However, the company stopped production in June 2011. Since then, it has exported large commercial cars to Indonesia in the form of completed vehicle. Hyundai Oto Komersial Indonesia (HOKI), a local distribution company, currently imports and sells the Hyundai Xcient and Mighty. However, sales of the products are low due to the weak price competitiveness caused by tariffs. Hyundai Motor’s combined sales of sedans and commercial cars in Indonesia stood at 571 as of June this year. It has only 0.1 percent market share. The Indonesian car market is dominated by Japanese automakers, such as Toyota with 36.6 percent market share, Daihatsu with 17.7 percent and Honda with 17.5 percent.

Hyundai Motor is trying to build the joint venture because the Indonesian commercial car market shows a significant growth. The market is the largest in Southeast Asia. According to the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), the commercial car market, including bus and truck, had sales of 41,295 units as of June this year, which is 1.5 times larger than the domestic market. The sales of cars with a payload of more than 10 tons, which are main products of Hyundai Motor, grew 11 percent on-year, though the overall sales of trucks decreased 10 percent.

Through the joint venture, Hyundai Motor is also seeking to strengthen the Southeast Asian commercial car market invasion. Under the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), ASEAN countries will eliminate intra-ASEAN car import duties from 2018. The company can sell cars manufactured in Indonesia free of duty to neighboring countries, including Vietnam.

Promising in what? Our total GDP is four times than yours, our HDI is ranked higher than yours, our manufacturing is much larger in capacity hence the infrastructure is already available. What more our population is 2.5 times larger than Vietnam, while our GDP 4 time larger hence the indication of much better productivity.

And here Hyundai already built their plant and there is plan to increasing their production for export toward Vietnam and Thailand

Last year Hyundai decided to let 215,000 units to produced in VN factories while only 2,000 in Indonesia. VN has more potential obviously. Overtaking Indonesia economy is just a matter of time, what you see is just a snapshot of a moment.

But again, Hyundai still has to decide which country will get the next car manufacturing under own name.

Big liar are you? Car sales and CKD production in Vietnam in 2017 is not even reaching 300.000, and the better part is down at rate 10 per cent compared to 2016 figure and then you said Hyundai Vietnam producing 215.000.

Auto sales in Vietnam down 16.3% in December, down 10.4% in 2017
According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) report issued on January 10, automobile sales (including non-VAMA manufactures) in Vietnam were down 16.3% year on year to 27,882 units in December. CKD volume was 20,047 units, and CBU volume was 7,835 units.
2017 annual sales were down 10.4% to 272,750 units. CKD volume was down 14.9% to 194,960 units, and CBU volume was up 3.1% to 77,790 units.
VAMA members (20 manufactures) sales in 2017 were down 7.8% to 250,619 units. VAMA members passenger car sales were down 7.8%, commercial vehicles were down 5.6%, and special purpose vehicles were down 23.6%.
By brand sales in 2017 based on MarkLines Data Center figures, Truong Hai was down 21.2% to 63,164 units. Toyota (excluding Lexus) was up 4.1% to 59,355 units. Ford was down 1.5% to 28,588 units. VinaMazda was down 19.0% to 26,017 units. Honda sales were up 5.5% to 12,134 units.
The zero-tariff policy for car imports from ASEAN nations went into effect on January 1, 2018.
Vietnamese automakers and importers have been racing to reduce the price of many models in recent months. However, customers are waiting for better prices.

And that figure from official Vietnam Automotive representative

Good luck trying to overtake 1 trillion economy

Vietnamese car manufacturer Thaco producing Hyundai stuffs is a fact, her 215,000 units per year designed capacity is a fact, too. Cars are very expensive in VN, 2 to 3 times more because of taxes and fees, otherwise car sales would reach 1 million. However thing will change this year with lower tariffs making cars cheaper, hence the reason why car sale declined last year.

Only delusional people believe we will stop progressing because we produce low number of upso or whatever the name of patents according to a jobless Taiwanese poster or a sis in Indonesia claiming her country has higher Hdi.

No offense. Overtaking Indonesia is not difficult, overtaking Singapore is a more difficult challenge. In the region Singapore is the benchmark for everything, the rest can be ignored.

Whatever crap you mentioned, VAMA itself mentioned Vietnam only assembled from CKD around 200 k car, you know CKD?

not to mention your country car sales is in decrease because Viet economic is in struggle trying to devaluate dong against US dollar meanwhile most of your basic need is imported to compete for attracting investment and push re export activities of Vietnam against resource rich and established basic manufacturing power neighbours like Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

manufacturing powers Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand? Have you ever been to Thailand and Malaysia? The people associate with Thailand as a great place for adult entertainment, Malaysia as tourist destination, and Indonesia? well you can think of yourself. But never be great manufacturers. Anyway I have been there to all countries there, modern Singapore looks like a first world, while other more third or best second world.

Ok I know we are still poor and backward hence need to learn from the best. We may learn from Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia a bit but they are just a step for us to move forward to the likes of China, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea and Japan.

All of you have 70 years to develop economy but look how far you are from a developed country?
