The government is considering a plan to construct a tunnel under the Jamuna River in Kurigram district.

Planning Minister MA Mannan gave the information while addressing a programme titled ‘Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Critical Conversations. Bangladesh Journey: Moving Beyond LDC’ at a city hotel on Sunday, reports BSS.

Mentioning that building more bridges on rivers across the country may affect the environment, he said if tunnels are built under rivers which are much safer, better, useful, these will be long lasting.

Commenting on the socio-economic conditions of the country, Mannan said no farmer and worker in the country remains unemployed.

“Everybody has work and they are the producers as they have wealth. We are very much happy in this regard,” he added.

The minister also mentioned that there are some weaknesses in the financial sector especially in the banking sector.

The Planning Minister said the high-ups of the government are continuing with some reform initiatives to address the difficulties in the banking sector.

Mannan also suggested that the BIDS should come with more research works on inequality, fiscal governance, macro stability and female migration.

Country’s renowned economist and BIDS Board member Dr. Wahiddudin Mahmud spoke on the occasion as guest of honour while General Economics Division (GED) member of the Planning Commission and BIDS Board member Dr Shamsul Alam spoke as special guest chaired by Director General of BIDS Dr. KAS Murshid.

Tunnel is far riskier and costly than bridges.

Who gave this crap idea to Govt. to build tunnel?

The govt ministers talk incessantly about development as a catchphrase. This is one example. Yes, build anything over the river, under the riverbed or through the river, it is OK. But, build these fancy things by yourself and not by paying foreign companies billions of dollars earned by exporting underwears stitched by the ill-paid women of the country. Top people in BD love fantasy talking.

I wonder who will be using this fancy tunnel of BAL govt. The country has no more than 500,000 vehicles in total. So, I think the BAL govt wants the young motorcyclists to go through this tunnel. Not a bad idea except that it will come true with a price tag of a few billion dollars and will be used by only a few.

By the way, when this Hasina Bibi will send Mars mission, build jet planes and construct airports in every village? She must be a direct descendant of Sultan Muhammad Tughlak of Delhi for saying fantasies every morning and all her ministers are following her examples.

Guys, let us not jump in and rubbish the idea.

I am sure that the idea was only mooted after discussions with experts in the field.

Jamuna Tunnel is just another BAL crap as usual. It is not even one month that these BAL cronies were informing us about ADB telling them the old rail lines are good enough to handle 200 kph bullet trains. So, who are these advisers the BAL cronies discussed with? THese cronies cannot write their names but are talking on nation-building.

why we need to construct tunnel in kurigram we already have Jamuna Bridge .:undecided: who will pay the bill as tunnel is more expensive to build then bridges . it seems govt. wants to take as many as possible fancy project to divert peoples attention from the illegitimate govt.
