Good cop, Bad cop: Tillerson praises Pakistan while Mattis hurls accusations
    • Says US policy on South Asia also about Pakistan’s long term stability as well
    • Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif in Washington to normalise bilateral ties

During a press briefing in Washington on Wednesday, Tillerson explained the “regional context” in which the latest US policy on South Asia was unveiled.

“It is not just about Afghanistan. This is about Pakistan and it’s long term stability as well,” he told the reporters.

The secretary of state also shared his US government’s concerns about the future of Pakistani government which the US government “wants to be stable and peaceful”. “Many of the same issues they (the government) are within Pakistan are our issues so we think there’s an opportunity for us to strengthen our relationship.”

“We are going to be working very hard at all levels,” he added.

Tillerson’s statement comes a day after US Defense Secretary James Mattis accused Pakistan of protecting terrorists.

The United States will try to work with Pakistan on terrorism “one more time”, Mattis said at a House Armed Services Committee hearing, adding, “if our best efforts fail, President Trump is prepared to take whatever steps are necessary.”

Mattis said assistant secretaries and national security staff will visit Pakistan to discuss the issue, followed by himself and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

The US relationship with Pakistan has ebbed and flowed over the course of the 16-year war in Afghanistan, getting most tense after Trump’s August speech outlining his new strategy for South Asia. President Trump said the United States would do more to pressure Pakistan to combat ‘terrorist safe havens’ in its borders.

Pakistan denies that it provides safe haven to terrorists, and says it has launched operations to clear militant groups from the Waziristan border region with Afghanistan.

Earlier in the day, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif arrived in the United States on a three-day important visit, where he discussed bilateral relations and situation in Afghanistan and Kashmir with his US counterpart Rex Tillerson and National Security Adviser Lieutenant General H.R.McMaster. The US’s new policy on South Asia also came under discussion.

This is the first high-level meeting after Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi met with the US vice-president in New York, last month.

Asif is accompanied by other dignitaries including, Pakistan Ambassador to US Aizaz Chaudhry, additional secretary America MOFA, director general America MOFA and deputy chief of mission Pakistan Embassy.

The foreign minister will also address a gathering at the US Institute of Peace (USIP), Washington, on Pak-US relations on October 5.

The bilateral visits of Pakistani and American diplomats were scheduled during the recent visit of PM Abbasi to the US.

These Americans are in denial mode. They got their a$$ whooped by the TTA. Begging Pakistan to do more is just a face-saving excuse.

These ‘Muricans are in total disarray. Even top figures like Mattis and Tillerson don’t seem to be in sync just like the rest of the administration. Trump says one thing, Tillerson says another and other officials completely different.

Pakistan should stay out of their reach. Pakistan should continue to work closely with China. The Americans are a total mess. Trumpland is a waste of time. Nothing good will ever come out of teaming up with Trumpland.

well they have a working democracy there. 10 months in the job its not easy for Trump to sort things out specially after 8 years of Obama.
he is doing a far better job than you can imagine. he is after all America's president and not the worlds president.
its not his problem that people have been trained to look up to Americas president as a role model. oh dear lord imagine the grabbing if that takes off with Trump.

just let them be. they will come around they are just impatient

LOL Trumpland is more than impatient. These morons think they can score some quick political successes since things are so bad at home.

News is that they ain’t gonna score any points with Pakistan. That boat has left the shore long ago.

Their role is for everyone to witness. They are more than welcome to stay in wasteland. Let’s see what they can achieve which they couldn’t in the past 16 years.

The good cop-bad cop routine US plays with Pakistan. The only difference between this administration and past administrations is that Trump is a blunt force instrument. No subtlety with this guy.

Funny. If Pakistan could move on from US it would have...a long time ago, but it hasn't because it's not as easy as some chest-beaters on PDF think. Economic reality alone dictates Pakistan's course.

Finally the Pakistani foreign minister is in USA to lick masta's shoes. I was starting to get worried that may be our government/military had grown some balls and self respect but I was obviously mistaken.

Lol, That's what you Indians said about Iran, their divorce with USA was quite acrimonious and the Iranians haven't looked back at all.

As for India, their marriage with USA is one of convenience.
