Fans get rare chance to watch top cricketers in Pakistan
    March 10, 2019

KARACHI: Fans queue up to enter the National Stadium for watching the PSL match between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars on Saturday.—PPI

KARACHI: Hundreds of cricket fans proudly displayed their tickets in Karachi as they walked to the National Stadium on Saturday, hours before Pakistan’s biggest city hosts the last leg of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) over the next nine days.

Shane Watson of Australia, Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy of the West Indies will be the star attractions during the eight matches in Pakistan’s premier domestic Twenty20 competition.

Sammy has been an unofficial ambassador of the PSL around the world since the PSL began in 2016. Sammy, who leads Peshawar Zalmi, won the second edition of the PSL at Lahore in 2017 as the PCB gradually started organizing more and more league games at home.

New Zealand’s Luke Ronchi was to play for defending champions Islamabad United as they were to take on Lahore Qalandars at 7:00pm local time (1400 GMT). David Wiese of South Africa and Nepal’s 18-year-old leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane will be in action for Lahore.

“I am a big fan of Ronchi, haven’t ever seen him playing live and today my dream will come true,” said college student Mohammad Jabbar.

Watson will be playing in Pakistan 14 years after being a member of the Australia ‘A’ team in 2005, while Pollard will be playing in Pakistan for the first time.

“It’s been 14 years since I last visited Pakistan, a place with some of the most passionate fans in world cricket. Can’t wait to give it our best shot in winning the trophy,” Watson said in a video message tweeted by his team Quetta Gladiators.

Lahore, which organised the PSL final two years ago, was unable to host three of the remaining eight PSL matches after the recent political tensions between Pakistan and India forced a delay in the opening of the international air space in Lahore.

That led the Pakistan Cricket Board to contemplate rescheduling the remaining eight games in Pakistan after organising 26 PSL league matches in the UAE. Karachi, which hosted last year’s PSL final, was chosen as the PCB was intent on showing the cricketing world that it’s safe to again host international teams in Pakistan.

“The perception that foreigners have about the safety situation in Pakistan will change and they will be satisfied with the security arrangements,” PCB chairman Ehsan Mani said in Karachi.

“I am delighted to welcome the foreign players who have come here for the PSL and I am sure it will help us in bringing more international matches to the country.”

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Mani said Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were the two teams which could tour Pakistan later this year if the PCB successfully organises PSL games in Pakistan.

It’s been 10 years since Pakistan hosted a fully-fledged bilateral cricketing series when the Sri Lanka cricket team bus was attacked by terrorists at Lahore in 2009.

Several key cricketing delegates from around the world will monitor security arrangements during the matches in Karachi.

Tight security will be provided for the six franchise teams, including more than 13,000 policemen and 2,500 paramilitary personnel in place from the team hotel to the stadium and in the surroundings of the National Stadium.

Hundreds of CCTV cameras have been installed in and around the stadium to monitor the movement of spectators, with identity cards having to be shown at entry points.

Sarfaraz, the losing captain: "Both teams were supported by the crowd, an excellent game. I think we've understood that cricket is not an easy game. Ahmed played an excellent innings, but Shinwari trumped that in the final over. Although we've qualified, we wanted to win because we have the momentum moving on. Looks like 180+ is par here."

Imad, the winning captain: "I told Usman not to give up. Now that we've qualified, the pressure is taken off. Credit, though, will go to Shinwari. It's not easy to beat a top-class team."

Usman Shinwari is the Man of the Match. He says, "I was thinking that the ball is old, so I should try to use it well. The plan worked today, I'm glad. We know that bowlers can get hit for fours and sixes in a game, so we can't get disheartened when that happens. Need to just lift ourselves for the next delivery, and that's what paid off now."

Umer Khan: "I knew we could defend five, because we know how Usman bhai can bowl. Maza aaya (was a lot of fun). The message was to bowl wicket-to-wicket during the final stages. I'm bowling deliveries that are forcing batsmen to reach at it, and I'm getting success with that plan. Slowly, all our key performers are contributing in every match."

Nisar: "This is one of the G.O.A.T t20 matches i have ever seen in my life."

11.03pm.... Still reeling from this finish. T20 cricket at its best, eh? We'll have the presentation soon, but spare a thought for Ahmed Shehzad. He single handedly kept Quetta in the game, but the match reminded us that 'it ain't over till the fat-lady sings'. However down and out you may be, you can never drop your shoulders. It takes just one ball to cause a shift in momentum, and Karachi today displayed that very trait. The win for Karachi will also scare the other playoff teams, because now they know that Karachi believe they can win from any situation. By the way, the four qualifiers are now decided:

    Quetta Gladiators,
    Peshawar Zalmi,
    Islamabad United and
    Karachi Kings
    qualify into the Playoffs

10.57pm Usman Shinwari conceded 22 off his third over, but took three wickets for only three runs in the final over to break Quetta and Lahore hearts. When Ahmed Shehzad was out for 99, with four runs to win in five balls, the game still belonged to Quetta. But Usman Shinwari's fiery death-over bowling has absolutely dismantled Quetta's middle order, and has sent a knife through the heart of Lahore fans. A classic T20 game, one that will be remembered for years to come.

Ibrahim: "That's the impact of home ground and support. A stadium cheering you and supporting you can make you defend 5 runs in the last over."

Karachi Kings were given a considerably tough time by Quetta Gladiators before they managed to come out on top by one run in the PSL 2019 clash between the two sides at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday.

The Kings had set a target of 191 runs for the Quetta Gladiators to chase and a point in the game came when it seemed like the Gladiators will chase it down successfully.

Ahmed Shehzad completely dominated the pitch, smashing boundaries in all directions. He was tragically robbed of his century, as he got out a single run shy of a 100 on Usman Shinwari delivery when Ingram made a breathtaking dive to catch the ball.

At the end of 18 overs, the Gladiators had looked like they had a real shot at victory with seven wickets in hand and only 24 runs away from the total.

With the last over remaining, they required five runs off six balls. The over saw significant drama as three wickets fell courtesy Usman Shinwari. He nearly scored a hat trick.

At the end of it all, Karachi Kings ripped victory from the jaws of defeat, winning by one run.

The Kings had been cruising towards a sizable total with the opening partnership of Babar Azam and Munro putting up 69 runs. The tables turned in the 9th over when Munro went down for 30 and then in the 12th over when Livingstone was out for 5 runs.

The 15th over then saw the fall of first Ingram at 14.2 overs and then Babar Azam at the end of the over.

The fifth and final wicket to go down for the side was Dunk's who was out in the first ball of the 19th over courtesy Sohail Tanvir's delivery.

It was then up to Iftikhar Ahmed to rescue the side who managed beautifully and ended up scoring 44 runs with 5 fours and 2 sixes in the mix off just 18 balls.

SIX! Top edged by Iftikhar Ahmed, but it is enough to travel the distance once again for another maximum

Babar Azam remained the top scorer with 56 runs off 46 balls, while the top wicket taker from the Gladiators' side was Mohammad Hasnain who took the crucial wickets of Azam and Ingram.

    Quetta Gladiators innings

The opening batsmen, Shane Watson, and Ahmed Shehzad made quick work of the target to chase, putting up a total of 68 runs before Watson fell in the 7th over for 20 runs on Umer Khan's delivery.

Ahmed Shehzad was joined by Roussow who too made an early exit for 10 runs at 8.4 overs, courtesy Umer Khan again.

Umer Akmal came in and helped add a further 27 runs to the scoreboard, while Shehzad continued to carry the bulk of the load.

Shehzad reached his half century in style with a six off just 35 deliveries.

After Umar Akmal's departure at 14.1 overs, when the side stood at 130/3, victory for the Gladiators started to seem a little uncertain.

DJ Bravo and Anwar Ali, the subsequent two players to stand in, put up disappointing performances, scoring nine and two respectively.

What made matters worse was when the skipper, Sarfaraz Ahmed got out for a duck courtesy Usman Shinwari.

However, the contest could have gone either way with the difference of required runs and remaining balls shrinking in magnitude with every hard hitting strike by powerhouse Shehzad.

It can safely be said it was Shinwari, who ended up being crowned man of the match, who turned the tide in Karachi's favour with three crucial wickets of Ahmed Shehzad, Anwar Ali and Sarfaraz Ahmed in the last over.

The Kings' Umer Khan also took three wickets - Watson, Rossouw and Akmal.

The Gladiators, who are currently at the top of the points table, have already secured a spot in the play-off.
