This article on BBC raises some thought provoking questions about Pakistan's own naval defence. Should we invest in fishermen as an informal force working as the ears and eyes of the regular navy? Should we give prizes for finding enemy gadgets in our seas? I am a proponent of such measures.

Many fisherman have been fishing in the same waters for generations, they often know the waters better than the forces themselves.

For example, it was actually fisherman who first found wreckage of the PNS Ghazi back in 1971.

They are Patriots, and the Navy also looks out for them. Some of the educated children of fishing communities of Balochistan and Sindh have started joining the Navy, they are born sailors.

Both sides regularly catch and detain fishermen. There is a reason for that

We need to make this use more effective by training them about modern naval threats, as well as supplying them with monitoring equipment that can transmit information to the naval command. Of course precautions would need to be taken, but I wish to see them more technologically competent.
