Mock polling in four Peshawar UCs tomorrow

PESHAWAR: The Election Commission, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, will hold mock polling in four union councils (UCs) of the Peshawar district tomorrow (December 28) as part of preparation to hold upcoming local government elections under biometric system.

An official of the provincial election commission told The News that the mock polling would be held in two urban and two rural areas of the district where machine and equipment for biometric system would be introduced for the first time.

He said KP Election Commissioner Sono Khan Baloch would supervise the polling process, which would be conducted by the judicial officers as well as polling staff. Efforts would be made to motivate voters in urban and rural union councils to cast their votes using the electronic machines. It has been estimated that 50,000 biometric machines would be required for the polling in KP during the local government elections. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be the first province to hold upcoming local government polls under the biometric system. The machines, with a lifespan of around 25 years, would reportedly cost more than Rs1 billion.

Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Inayatullah Khan said the provincial government would bear all the expenditure for holding the LB polls under the biometric system.

“We have requested the provincial election commission and Nadra authorities to make all arrangements to introduce the biometric system where the fingerprints of a voter would be examined through machines,” he said. The only purpose of holding polls under the biometric system is to make the process fair and transparent, he added. The minister said that the provincial government would take all political parties into confidence for holding the upcoming local government polls through biometric system. He said a final date the local government elections in the province would be announced soon.

This is no first step, this is one step forward after taking ten step back.
Local bodies govts. were the great move which was dissolved by the mutual conspiracy of politicians.

I commend PTI and Imran Khan efforts. But this corrupt system will try its best to resist reform.

If the system of elections was fair, PTI would have won the election.
