The first phase of Joint Naval Exercise , Naseem Al Bahar XI being conducted at Port Al Jubail, KSA between Pakistan Navy (PN) and Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) has concluded.

The first phase of exercise comprised of a series of harbour activities to provide synergy in different domains of naval operations. It also afforded opportunity for both navies to conduct operational planning for the joint naval operations to be conducted in subsequent sea phase of the exercise .

During the first phase, various training exercises were organised onboard PN and RSNF Ships and harbour facilities. Planning modules on conduct of amphibious landing operations, escorting operations, sniper / camouflage techniques and Mine Counter Measures procedures were rehearsed by the two navies.

Mission Commander of Pakistan Navy and Exercise Director from RSNF closely monitored and supervised the training activities.

Earlier, a brief about the joint naval exercises was conducted wherein details of different evolutions and exercises were discussed by both sides. Mission Commander of PN and Exercise Director from RSNF were also present at the Opening Brief.

The Joint PN – RSNF Naval Exercise Naseem Al Bahr is aimed on enhancing interoperability and sharpen the tactical proficiency in Counter Piracy, Anti Air & Surface Warfare and Mine Countermeasure Warfare. These exercises will help in developing synergy in operations against asymmetric, air, surface and mine threats.

On completion of harbour phase, next phase of the Exercise will include joint naval operations at sea. Concurrently, Pakistani and RSNF Marines are also engaged in Joint Marine Exercise Deraa Al Sahil.

Current exercise is 11th of Naseem Al Bahr Series and will continue till 17 Feb in Saudi Arabian Waters.

Conduct of Joint Maritime Exercise between Pakistan Navy and RSNF in present geo-political milieu assumes great significance and will go a long way in enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Since the inception of biennial exercise Naseem Al Bahr in 1993, it has matured as an advanced level maritime exercise involving almost all facets of naval forces. The level of participation from both sides signifies the trust and mutual confidence which prevails between the two brotherly countries.

Joint naval training between the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) and the visiting Pakistani Navy continue in the Persian Gulf, the latest expression of the special relationship between the Kingdom and arguably its closest ally.

The exercises, codenamed Nassem al-Bahr, began on Sunday at the King Abdulaziz Naval Base at Port Al-Jubail along the Persian Gulf. They are meant to last one week and are focused on strengthening bilateral security, counter piracy, water-to-air and water-to-surface warfare, and mine countermeasures.

"Through these exercises, we aim to exchange experiences, improve combat readiness, and strengthen cooperation between the two countries," said RSNF Eastern Fleet Rear Admiral Laafi bin Hussain Al-Harbi in a statement.

"A number of Saudi and Pakistani naval ships, boats and vertical take-off and landing aircraft are participating in these exercises, in addition to the Royal Saudi Air Force," Al-Harbi noted.

Upcoming phases of the exercises will practice amphibious landings, escorts, anti-mine operations and sniper/camouflage techniques.

The two countries first conducted Nassem Al-Bahr in 1993 and have held them biennially since then. However, this is the first time that the exercises are being held off Saudi Arabia instead of in Pakistani waters.

Pakistan deployed five warships for the exercises: the PNS Zulfiqar and Tariq frigates, the PNS Azmat fast-attack missile craft, the PNS Quwwat missile boat, and the PNS Munsif minehunter. They also deployed naval helicopters and P-3C Orion Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft.

Concurrently, Pakistani and Saudi Marines are engaged in their own exercises: Joint Marine Exercise Deraa Al-Sahil. According to a statement from Saudi Brigadier General Sajir bin Raffid al-Enezi, "The exercises in which the Marines and Special Naval Forces participate are a simulation of real military operations, conventional warfare and mine action operations."

"These exercises also include shooting with live ammunition as well as interception, inspection and counter-piracy operations," he added.

Pakistan Denies Existence of Nuclear Arms Agreement With Saudi Arabia - Foreign Ministry

A RSNF press release from Monday called the exercises a symbol of trust and confidence between the two Islamic states.

Islamabad and Riyadh have historically maintained an extremely close "special" relationship. Although both nations have denied it, nuclear scholars have accused Saudi Arabia of funding Pakistan's nuclear program. Meanwhile, Pakistan has lent their military expertise to the Kingdom, frequently conducting joint exercises and training with less experienced Saudi troops.
