LAHORE: In a caution about low energy supplies during the upcoming winter months, consumers have been forewarned that natural gas will be provided only during cooking hours.

Impressing upon consumers regarding wise use of gas in the coming months, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) said the gap between demand and supply of gas increases more than three times during winter. Consequently, the difference can be as high as 500mmcfd [million cubic feet per day] for domestic consumers in the whole network of gas utility during the severe winter months.

Hence, gas will only be provided during cooking hours in winter to domestic consumers, who have been assigned top priority in merit order, said a spokesperson for the SNGPL here Monday.

The gas utility asked consumers to use gas wisely; they should use electric heaters instead of traditional unhealthy gas heaters and use solar or instant geysers on priority basis, instead of traditional gas geysers.

Due to increasing gas demand, the government is ensuring import of liquefied natural gas (LNG). About availability of gas for other consumer categories, the spokesperson said that despite all efforts, the industrial sector might also face load management.

To a question, an official of gas utility said gas supply to certain areas in winter may completely be cut for a few hours in order to avoid collapse of distribution network. There is no assurance of non-stop and normal gas supplies to even high-priced bulk domestic consumers of regasified LNG and industry, said the official. The SNGPL is not bound to provide gas to industry during winter months, as the supply agreements have been for nine months only.

The gas utility has been under immense pressure for meeting gas demand even after import of LNG. In such efforts, SNGPL has to face severe financial crunch in the form of circular debt, which now hovers around Rs71 billion. The piling up of gas sector circular debt has become a complicated issue, as no one in the government takes responsibility in this regard. Gas utility in the past had been asked to divert RLNG in order to ensure sustained supplies. But now no one is ready to bear the financial cost of diverting RLNG to domestic consumers.

It is so darn convenient for them to recommend us electric heaters, when they keep increasing the electricity tariff as if it were Tesla's stocks. I know a dude who got handed a 24 thousand electricity bill last winter and he lives in a two bedroom flat. I guess he should be ready to pay north of 35 thousand per month this winter in order to have a bearable temperature inside his house.

Govt needs to increase gas prices import gas in LNG, build LNG storage if feasible to bring flexibility rather then doing gas shedding

Absolutely impractical suggestion.

Solar-powered = Very expensive
Electric solutions = Significantly spike electric bill.

Instant Gas Geysers = practical solution no doubt but prices will skyrocket in the winter season. Much better to buy these at earliest.

Nothing wrong with this. On my recent visit to Pakistan I was struck by the waste of energy with underlying reason being energy prices in Pakistan are too much and do not reflect the true international market prices. Those who get piped gas are well off and fortunate. The vast majority live in rural areas have no piped gas and rely on bottled gas which is more expensive then piped gas. Now consider. The poor of the rural areas have to pay more than the piped gas of the middle classes living in urban areas. Yet it will be the latter group screaming ....

Overall, the taxation and pricing regimens in Pakistan are highly regressive by design. Making law-abiding citizens pay for all the stolen resources in addition to the charges for what they consume is just the icing on the cake.

Let me narrate a story.

Once upon a time, there was a bridge leading to the capital of a kingdom across a wide and dangerous river. As the population grew, the bridge grew crowded. Not wanting to spend money to build another bridge, the King ordered a toll charge, but that did not reduce the traffic. Then his wazir recommended that in addition to the toll, anybody wishing to cross the bridge also be given 50 lashes. The King was concerned that the people might revolt at such a preposterous idea. However, this did reduce the traffic and the King was happy.

One day, the people requested an audience with the King to talk about the new arrangement. Fully expecting to receive a backlash at the unjust measures, the King agreed reluctantly. The few people chosen for the audience came up in the court, and requested humbly that the time to cross the bridge was too long and it was too expensive. The King tried to be diplomatic, and asked what the people thought the solution should be. The people requested that instead of one person administering the lashes, that number be increased to ten, so that the time taken to get lashed could be reduced. The King was internally flabbergasted, but agreed to the request.

After the representatives had left the court, the King asked his wazir about what had just happened. The wazir's reply? "Aleejah, I know our people."

I leave the moral of the story to be drawn by the readers of the post for themselves. :D

People would happily accommodate gas load shedding in winter. They are accustomed to it and will consider it as another conspiracy to bring down IMF government

my cooking hours are 1 to 12 AM-PM
The local cuisine takes too much energy to cook. It burns atleast 10 times more energy than it may provide.

With low gas pressure, slow cooked healthier foods will be cooked.

Government will now release list of halal efficient food and sin tax the pulaos, biryanis and payes.
