    "slow clapping"

We are basically making the same mistake as Mughals did, not giving much attention to the sea and sea based trade and warfare, depending too much on foreign help and leading a life of expansive luxury on intermediately owned resources, facing alot of brain drain and putting our offensive efforts internally rather than externally. sigh

In Pakistan, a glaring division exists between the mainstream industries which directly benefit the economy and population through hard foreign exchange earning and the so-called 'strategic' organizations.
Whereas the mainstream industries can not even produce a TV set on their own, the strategic organizations are developing systems which represent the frontline of technology.
This is a picture of our flawed mindset that 'in the face of national survival, all other matters become secondary'.
The problem is, that all we have done for 70 years is survive. We have not moved forward and that is because the barracks have dominated the pathetic 'aiwaans'.

Yes the problem is that in Pakistan we are not encouraging private sector to invest in defence research and development. Still purchasing most equipment from overseas. Probably because of some commission and kick backs to the hierarchy. We as a nation should first decide to be not corrupt and not allow corruption.
Than encourage local industry. Starting from small armoured vehicles from local vendors providing them to police and QRF.
Another issue is with the Pakistani mentality of not investing in technology and related products rather anybody who has a few lakh to few crore, invests in plots while more richer (with a few billion rupees) start developing a housing society on agricultural land (our generations will eat by planting crops on their lawns)

Dear sir main fault is in governance because taxes are so huge that one can't afford building up a shipyard and even if one does he can't get orders due to huge taxes since it is my field I know that most of our own merchant fleet goes to Dubai for repairs
Our government don't know potential of shipyards or shipping sector we had 89 ships at time of partition but now how much are left. Sir they are just 9 so you tell who's destroying our industry

The biggest fault in shipping history was nationalization of shipping companies that finished race between companies and led us to a slow progress

Our navy has been strengthened by the presence of Chinese Navy. The Navy of our brotherly country. We'll beef up on our military down the line. First thing first boys, we gotta work out our economy. Lets spend 15 years to build our economy. Make it a trillion dollar economy. In the meanwhile, we keep on doing necessary arrangements to keep par with India.
Once Economy has been on its way to the top 3, that's when we beef up on our military capabilities. Remember, by that time Chinese equipment will be far better than Western equipment. What we purchase then will be more beneficial. Economy first and then is the rest. With tottering economy we can't conquer India which is inevitable. Remember Ghaza-e-Hind. We'll conquer India, we'll be ruling class of subcontinent again, in sha Allah.

Thank you Marvellous. I believe, property sector needs to be introduced to progressive taxation in the form of number of properties one has. For example. If I have 1 house and 1 plot in my name than 2% of their value in tax, if I have 2 houses and 2 plots than tax should increase in percentage value to 4%. And keep increasing progressively.
But only such steps may lead to capital flight to other property havens like Dubai. To address this issue, we can take up data sharing agreements with such countries regarding bank accounts, investments in properties, bonds, stocks, companies and off shore companies of our citizens those countries.
And simultaneously the Government should take initiatives in revitalization of sectors like auto and shipping industry by setting up new factories or yards with majority shares (51-55%) owned by the Government and minority shares offered to public.
Joint ventures with foreign countries could also be taken up with a joint majority owned by Government and that foreign company the rest shares to public. With time gradually the Government can get out by selling it's shares. Allowing private sector to take over.
Daewoo shipbuilding from South Korea and Peugeot-Citroen autos from France could be good options. It will allow us to start from their designs and benefit from their research and development rather than going back to reinvent the wheel.
South Korea makes 35% DWT of global shipping industry while China accounts for 41%. Indeed their is scope.

Yes nationalization indeed hurt us more than the events of 1971. But without getting into things that some members with political affiliations might not like.
How do you suggest to improve the ship building industry of Pakistan, since you just told us that you work in that field? Reducing taxes on shipbuilding will off course be the first step in that direction.

    Hi,

Its seems that everyone wants to jump to negative conclusions every time.

If you guys look at the ports Bangladesh and India have you won't be making these kinds of remarks. While we have only 1 port till now and that too was too much congested till now and still is.

So, simple question, yes our govt's are corrupt and if they had allowed private companies to invest in shipbuilding, where will they get the space ?

If it helps the conversation, Bangladesh did not have any strategic 'plan' to have the formal and informal dockyards we have. It simply happened because 70% of the land is near a river, small or large. People need to get around, so we need large boats (launches) as public transportation. Boats like these are built informally on open islands, not even a dock.
