ROME: Rome’s ancient Colosseum was lit in red on Saturday in solidarity with persecuted Christians, particularly Aasiya Bibi, a woman condemned to death under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws.

Hundreds gathered on a rainy night outside the Roman amphitheatre that is a symbol of the martyrdom of early Christians to hear the husband and daughter of Aasiya Bibi.

The Catholic woman has been living on death row in Pakistan since 2010, when she was condemned for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Islam after neighbours objected to her drinking water from their glass because she was not Muslim.

Human rights groups such as Amnesty International say the blasphemy law is increasingly exploited by religious extremists as well as ordinary Pakistanis to settle personal scores.

“The aim of the blasphemy laws is crush people who believe differently,” Archbishop Nunzio Galantino, secretary-general of the Italian bishops conference, told the gathering.

The law does not define blasphemy and evidence might not be reproduced in court for fear of committing a fresh offence. There are no penalties for false accusations.

Aasiya Bibi’s case drew international attention after the murder of two politicians who tried to intervene on her behalf.

At the Rome gathering, her husband Ashiq Masih said his wife was innocent of blasphemy. “This is just hate against Christians, who are considered impure,” he said.

The husband and daughter, who broke down in tears as she addressed the group, were earlier received by Pope Francis, who told her: “I think often of your mother and I pray for her”.

European Parliament President Antonio Tajani, who has been tipped as a possible Italian prime minister after next week’s election, said that persecution of Christians was “a genocide”.

“A message must be sent from this place. It is the duty of Europe to defend these values (of religious liberty) wherever on earth they are trampled on,” Tajani said.

Rebecca Bitrus, a Nigerian Christian woman who was held for two years after she was abducted by Boko Haram Islamist militants, told of how she was repeatedly beaten and raped.

During the event, organised by the Catholic group “Aid to the Church in Need,” there were live link-ups with Aleppo, Syria and Mosul, Iraq, both of whose minority Christian populations have been hit hard by wars.

Italy which robs desperate refugees of their money is lecturing PAK on human rights. I hope my pakistani brothers won't accept the diatribe of these shameless Italian looters silently and petition your government to give appropriate diplomatic response. Learn from the chinese about how they tell these westerners to buzz off from their internal affairs.

Btw some 700 syrian muslim died by in Ghouta in the last 1 week by Assad regime bombing. Before millions of rohingyas got ethnically cleansed while christian militas slaughtered Muslims CAR. But Christians are living pretty peacefully in all parts of the muslim world with their religiously holidays getting official recognition and statements from Muslim heads of states and their churches being built on tax payers money. PAK should make counter PR against Italian mafias false propaganda. Muslims really suck at PR and countering false propaganda about them.

I understand Urdu but I have no idea what you've written here. But I am assuming it was nothing positive regarding my post. If my assumption is true then I can also assume you support the blasphemy law. In which case I have to say that I am sorry that you see other people in such a deranged way. Hopefully that will improve in due time but I doubt it.

Every law has merits and demerits, its necessary, to make sure no innocent get effected by any law.
But the case i am referring here is the happiness of some opportunist people who are feeling happy by watching this one sided story released on the other nations....

    :coffee: No problem with law

If laws were broken then punishment is normal process in general
The courts should review the case but if review was already done then enough money has been spent to review it already

Not quite familiar with this case as it seems like a low level issue. Perhaps there should be a 500 hour Sensitivity course training for culprit for first offence

But No need to kiss anyone's a-ss

Simply expecting release by virtue of religion seems a bit unnatural and the lady was jailed after review of courts unless there was a problem in her case process don't really see an issue

In Italy and India they might treat you even worst, if your burn bible or eat beef but they first label the person as terrorist and than deliver him a death no Pakistani can ever imagine.
On the other hand, blasphemy law is a nonsense, and how TLY and PTI behaved lately upon rumors of amendments in blasphemy law... it shows they are biggest jahils ever produced in Pakistan.
My advice to youth, stay away from TLY and PTI, both will take you to hell.

And why do you think so sir? You think blasphemy should be tolerated in Pakistan in the name of free speech? You do understand that if the law is removed, people will start taking law into their own hands and it will lead to chaos. It should be improved yes, and anyone making false accusations that he/she can't prove should be dealt a harsh punishment.

Dramaybaz bc. That woman was prosecuted for blasphemy, a governor died defending her rights, the person who killed that governor was hanged by the state even after massive agitations by religious right, and during all this Asia bibi is sitting comfortably in a B class jail getting presidential level security. This ain't genocide.

Well Pope can't do much against India

Holly water does not work against people who drink Cow Tonic/Vitamin rich discharge (Based on vedic scientist)

The red color was generally for all christians facing persecution and ironic they choose to use a controversial symbol

"COLLOSEUM" which is symbol for killing of slaves for enjoyment :omghaha:
Where people drank wine and ate lavish meals while animals and people died below the areana for their enjoyment , Glorification of Colloseum .....don't know wha to say

Just don't know what to see I imagine gladiators and random slaves battling out in that Colloseum and random deaths of peasents

Either indians are morons or they really don't knw history in attempt to create false news they really mess up big time

    To all bigots,

Before law imposed there were lot of riots and killings but after that riots stopped law worked well, but needed strict punishments for misusing it.

    @waz @The Eagle @Horus

Kindly check positive ratting and encouragement by Indian member who even don't have knowledge about blaspheme law which exists in 35 countries.
Not only this law covers Islam but same can be applied if a Muslim insult non-Muslim believer.
